If there's a black line when scanning but not when printing, you need to clean the scan bed. Either the glass has something on it or check the paper path if you're using the ADF. A single ink spot either place will print a line down the whole length of your scan.

if you are using a fax machine, open top cover and clean roller with cotton cloth with some alcohol in it or take it to technician shop and have rollers replaced.

on scanners or all-in-one printers, this is a scanner head problem, take it for repair or buy new one (the cheapest).

SOURCE: Black line down middle of page

Clean the inside of the printer with a soft rag, be gentle and get as much toner up as you can, also your toner carttridge may be empty or the crum may be bad, start with a fresh toner carttridge and clean the printer out where the cartridge sits.

SOURCE: Black line down the middle of scanned documents.

Try leaving the cover open and run a test scan, once with a fresh sheet as the item to be scanned and then a second time without anything on the table.  You may see what is blocking the light source or possibly a defect in it.
Scanning is done left-right, left-right across the width of the page and the vertical stripe indicates that the blockage is present during each scanned line.
In servicing copiers and multifunction machines, I have found a number of curious contaminents, one of the most annoying was a moth, still alive, that would randomly sit on the lamp, causing some pages to come out OK, others not.
If your copies and printouts are coming out fine, then only the scanner can be at fault.

Black vertical lines come and go for scans to computer and copies

I suspect the Document Feeder is not aligned properly and light is leaking in. You will need to have a technician in to check the alignment of the scanner to see if it needs to be readjusted. random black lines on edges usually indicate light leaking into the scan area.

I have a big black line down the middle of my scans

If dirt sticks to the scan module, it will be scanned continuously and appear as a line in the output. Clean the glass with Isopropyl Alcohol. Dont use any other solvent.

Check your flat bed and Document feeder scanning glass need to be clean, if any dot or dust in scanning glass of document feeder it will appear a line, check this points first
1- Check printouts from computer or FAX if it is clean problem in scanning section
2- Check using Copying a blank paper using only Flatbed if it prints without any line its problem from document feeder Scanning glass
So solution is clean the Document feeder scanning glass using wet cloth, note careful about wet cloth switch off the machine and clean it

Dear Donna,
When a document is scanned from the top portion of the printer, it will loop around and output from underneath. The scanning glass on the far left side will have some debris on it. Lift the the lid exposing the glass portion, inspect for "stuff" on the glass, perhaps pen or white out. You can use a mild soap and lightly dampened cloth to remove any debris.
Good Luck,

lift the auto feeder and clean the scanner glass that your pages scan across -it is dirty. You can make a copy afterward and this will tell you if you have solved the problem.

Black line down middle of scan

Well I hate to give out bad news but if that line is in the exact same location on every scan it means that the element (the scanning light) has failed. Sorry that I could not earn a FixYa for you. If you need to replace the scanner I have had excellent luck with Epson scanners. Here is a link to a few on Amazon.com for refrence.

&field-keywords=epson+scanner&x=0&y=0
Just copy the link and paste it into your web browser. there are also some very good all in one options. I have had this one for a year and it works well:

Hope that was at least helpful.
Take Care,
