There is a switch on these pool cleaners that has options "top, bottom, and automatic". If you have the cleaner set to automatic and it is staying on the surface, try changing the switch from the automatic setting and put it on "bottom" until you get the bottom clean.

I have a Phantom. It goes into the skim mode (the top jets shoot), but won't rise to the top. Anyone????

I had the same problem. The fix is easy. The stiraphom floats inside get waterlogged and need to be replace after several years of being left in the water. The pair cost about $15 and easily slide in and out once the top cover of the phantom is removed.

I have a Hayward Phantom pool cleaner, the function that controls, Top, both or bottom is not working. I replaced the Gear box and switch, but that did not fix the problem, it still just rides on the top...

Try running the cleaner with the top cover off and the pressure on while you hold it with your hand. If you move the switch back and forth you should see pressure changes in the hoses that attach to the manifold. Check to make sure the hoses are attached and there is no leaking pressure. Even a small leak will have a big effect. Next on to the manifold - it has two pistons, one controls the "turnaround" function and the other controls the dive and surface. The pistons get bound up and don't slide easily in their cylinders. Really it's a serious design flaw - how are the pistons suposed to stay lubricated long term with chlorinated water running through at high pressure?

The manifold can be taken apart and the pistons lubricated with standard pool lube. Take the piston caps off of the ends (very carefully) and lubricate the rubber seals. The piston rods may come loose as they do not secure tightly to the small plastic doors that slide to control water flow in he manifold. In that case, take the manifold apart carefully and be sure to keep the various screws organized - reattach the piston rods. I have done this entire process without disconnecting any rubber hoses. You will definately feel like you are in he weeds when you have this thing completely apart. This is normal!
I have had to do this about once a year to keep my phantoms running. Finally, you may want to take a picture of the innards beforehand to help you remember how the hoses and components fit in the unit. It's confusing. Good luck!

Unit does not go under water

Have you adjusted your setting? If the cleaner is set to "top" or "automatic", try switching it to "bottom" only so that it will dive to the bottom of the cleaner. In addition, check the pool cleaners hose weights to make sure that they are spaced correctly and that you don't have too many hose floats attached.

Phantom does not want to run on bottom of pool

If your cleaner is running in top or automatic mode, try moving it to bottom. This is a common problem with these pool cleaners and owners often forget to adjust the dive setting. If the cleaner just isn't working at all, it could be low water pressure. Check your pump and filter for overfilling or debris, check all connections to make sure that they are secure, and check the flow coming from your in line to your pool cleaner.

Cleaner will not go to bottom of pool

Have you adjusted the setting? If you have it set on "top" or "automatic", try moving your setting to strictly clean the bottom. If you have tried this and it is still not diving, I would suggest checking your pool cleaners hose floats. Make sure that they are spaced properly and that you do not have added hose weights.

Hayward phantom will not float fully to the surface

If it has skimmed the top of the pool before try rearranging sections of the hose and make sure all sections of hose can rotate freely.

Hayward Phantom pool cleaner-up/both/down switch replacement

There are 5 screws on the bottom, remove them and hold the cleaner together while turning it right side up. Lift off the top cover (watch the styrofoam inserts that go behind the back wheels), sometimes they fall out when the cover is removed but they're easy to put back in place. This will give you access to both the switch and the round gear box. Lift both out then put the switch on and lower the gear box back into place.
