Remove the batteries and remove the R or RED wire from the thermostat's sub base R/ RED terminal for 1 hour, if this does not work, replace it.

I have a honeywell III chronotherm thermostat /It won't turn on the heat or the air conditioning when turned to those settings, but it sometimes will when turned to "auto". The batteries seem fine, no...

it sounds like it is time to repalce the stat, auto is set to allow the fan to run only when the heat or a/c is on, the switch for heat and cool will select either, and the temperature lever should allow contact for the bulbs to bring on the desired component. there are no replaceable parts on a thermostat, or I would try to walk you through replaceing them. good luck.. I prefer the honeywell vision pro or the white rodgers 9500 series stats

My Honeywell chronotherm IV Plus thermostat intermittent problem

The Chrono Therm 3 and 4's were some of the worst products that honeywell has EVER put out. I would suggest switching to the Vision Pro 8000, please consult your local HVAC company for more information regarding the change over.

Upstairs honeywell thermostat went out on 3/7 [no display]

FIRE THIS GUY!!!!

You have two systems.
These two systems should be wired totally independent of one another. I have the Pro series t/stat in my house. I love it.... I am a retired contractor I get stuff at cost. I paid about $130 for that t/stat. I understand he is in business to make money. But he should be fair enough that in the future you would want to call him back, Or even give him a nice referral. Alol this guy wants is your money. If the first guy admitted thatbhe did not have the expertice. He shouldn't be paid the experts price.
Call your city or county building inspectors office. Tell them that you would like a list of 4 or 5 reputable heating contractors in your area.
$275 should be fair for the nice t/stat and a fused transformer. Although a cheap t/stat would be fine.
Plus 75 bucks to pull upthe driveway. 60 -90 bucks labor to staighten things out. You should not have to pay for the romantic weekend away for the contractor and his wife.
GOOD LUCK!
