Some compressors/condensers can be re-gassed, depending on what the problem is! Can be soldered and gassed etc...ask around..
If you were told to replace the entire compressor unit (condensing unit), the person diagnosed the compressor is most likely bad. Depending on the age of the unit, it is hard to tell if this is a good decision. Overall condition plays a role in the decision process as well.

Look for doors not properly closing, poor air flow over coil or something blocking air flow, improper freon level.
