I have been using magnovox dvd recorders (have owned 6 and have 4 in use now.) And these recorders will record on any disc you put in it. I prefer to use DVD+RW for best editing cause if you record and then decide to erase any particular part of what was recorded its as simple as selecting where to "chapter divide" then delete what you want and then the space can be re-recorded on. Buy to your issue with error message. I've come across this before. And like you I was spinning my gears trying to figure out why. Sometimes, especially when discs are purchased in a bulk stack. I find that its not uncommon where some of them discs are physically damaged rendering them useless. They look fine but a closer inspection will show damage. Take your fingers and pinch gently around edge of disc and slide around the whole circumference. If its not smooth the whole way around then that's the problem. This also matters for inside edge where the disc gets clipped in. Buy mainly with outer edge. Heat can cause warps on disc usually from improper storage or disc left in the payer/recorder for extended period of time with unit power on . In pause record is the most vulnerable chance. These maggy recorder can be in record mode and paused record mode indefinitely. Hope that helps.it was my problem maybe you're experiencing the same issue.
Have you've tried cleaning the laser with a cleaning disc? Recordable disc • We strongly recommend for good recording quality: SONY DVD+RW 4x, MAXELL DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, SONY DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, TDK DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, MAXELL DVD-RW 4x, MAXELL DVD-R 8x/16x • Discs that have been tested and are proven to be compatible with this recorder: VERBATIM DVD+RW 4x VERBATIM DVD+R 8x
Failing this it may be worth removing the cover and cleaning the lens directly with a QTip and some lens cleaning fluid. Only use a drop and then wipe off with a clean dry QTip.
The other option is that you are using an incompatible format of blank DVDs. I've heard of people having problems using DVD-R & DVD-RW and although it is lised as being suitable for all types of recordable DVDs I belive you're best using DVD+R & DVD+RW.
The Manual states
VERBATIM DVD-RW x VERBATIM DVD-R 8x JVC DVD-RW 4x MAXELL DVD-R 16x
Ya and no luck. I'm using DVD+R discs. I may just have to try it again. I hate wasting money when things don't work. This is the second time it's happened (although the other product was not a DVD recorder but a crappy Roxio product)
The main problem here is that it is fundamentally a Funai unit so doesn't come up to the Philips standards of old.
The only solution would be to replace the laser but this isn't normally viable due to the cost of the replacement laser and the time taken to replace it, plus the fact that in the end it would go the same way as this one.

Ya my husband has done the cleaning, he always handles that he's a good electronics guy and yet we still have no luck with it. I'm using DVD+R discs. It's frustrating though to have spent money on something that isn't working. (this is twice it's happened although the other product is not a dvd recorder but a Roxio crappy product). Thanks for the comment. I may still try it again.
is there any way to fix it?
