HP ended support at VISTA I am told.
got VISTA>??
the OS on your PC is OEM and not sold now, anywhere.
why not ask this at HP and not here.
ask them and hear the NO word from them GOD of HP.
btw , no PC told at all nor one clue what OS is there.
HP DVD557S is and external DRIVE.
is the PC ok, is that it and lost the drivers for the HP DVD557S
is that it.?
no internet means you lost the 2d path to drives. CD drivers or internet. gone
we go to a 2nd good PC with internet
and find the drives and put them on a thumb drive.
then move them to the off grid PC. failing
its 12 years old this drive. DVD.,my guess w7 driver disk
cam in the box new, LOST THAT or just bought a used DRIVE.DVD
the problem for you is no internet
making PnP plug and play dead and the drive with it born dead.
PnP is not an option nor is internet an option.
if you add any device new to any PC the internet must be working
or the new device fails most the time.
a PC101 factoid.
call HP and for the CD with the missing drivers.
here is the best answer of all

"Hi,
HP supplies the Drivers for their Hardware.
You need the Drivers to make the Computer and HP's Hardware work together.
HP stopped Support and supplying Drivers for that Hardware at Vista.

For any more information I suggest that you ask in the HP Support forums.

there forum has echos of the past on topic but no drivers now
they erased all vista and XP suppot
w7 next.
What's the make and model of your laptop? You normally find this on the lower part of the screen, or somewhere near the keyboard. You can also take a look underneath the laptop. I need this information to be able to help you download the necessary drivers.
cheers.
