This is the expected result, you are experiencing feedback. Try turning the "Contour" knob all the way to the left and turn down the tone knob on your guitar.
Overdrive is the key to the crunchy metal sound. The only effect on that amp is reverb.
You may want to consider getting an overdrive pedal to get the sound you want.
Make sure the pedal and the amp ae compatible. MANY pedals can only be used with one type and model amp. If this was used with a different model amp originally, it is probably incompatible with the ine you are trying to use it with now.
have you tried the footswitch to change channels. also. my amp has to be in channel 2 position (with the button on the head) before i can use the footswitch. sometimes the input/footswitch jack wears out and you need to bend the internal tip/ring tabs of the jack to make better contact. also like on my fender amp, i had just a standard mono instrument cable going to my footswitch and it was acting wierd cause it needed a stereo instrument cable. one last thing on the grounding resistors on the pcb, they get hot and break the solder welds which messes with all sorts of stuff in amps. usually look like sugar cubes , cement resistor. 5watt usually under 1k ohm. check for bad solder welds on the pcb where the big resistors are and the switches/buttons and at the footswitch. there may be a bad ic or transistor for the channel swithing
It sounds like a filter capacitor(s) has failed. The electrolytic caps dry out and cease to perform allowing unfiltered power to reach the preamp sections and get amplified.
Being this is tube with high voltages, an experienced person should work on it due to shock danger.
I assume you checked the tubes for shorts as well as emission since a heater to cathode short could cause this as well.
it could be your guitar pickups. try using another guitar or getting your pickups waxed at your local music store. also if your playing in a small room kind of loud, or if your using single coil pickups (like fender statocaster pickups) you will definitely get a feedback noise. if that does not work let me know.
