I have a Brother MFC-6490CW connected to a telephone line. The line has a phone with a regular answering machine on it. When someone calls the line, it rings first on the regular phone. After 4 rings it goes to the Brother machine and has several high pitched chirps. The answering machine on the regular phone does not pick up. How do I disable calls going to the fax machine? I need to receive phone messages on the answering machine after business hours.

You need to set your printer to receive faxes in "Manual" mode. This mode allows calls to ring "through" the fax machine without it interfering.

To do this you need to do the following:
>Press Menu
>Hit Up or Down until you get to "Initial Setup" and then select it
>Hit Up or Down until your get to "Receive Mode" and then select it
>Hit Left or Right until you get to "Manual" and click OK
>Hit Stop/Exit - the LCD should display the current receive mode

You should now be good to go. Just remember - in Manual mode you actually have to be present and hit a button to receive faxes.

The fax machine will have an auto answer function which is what you need to disable otherwise it will keep trying to pickup calls.

Can't send fax. Getting transmission verification report stating NG: poor line condition/ out of memory. HELP!!

There are two possible reasons why your printer display the error message.

1. Poor Line Condition
- electrical interference on the line -Make sure electrical or electronic appliances do not interfere with the printer's phone line
- poor line connection - If you have a phone try connecting it directly to line outlet. Listen to the dial tone, if you hear noisy and static, then you will need to call your local telephone company cause there is a problem in your phone line. If dial tone is clear and stable then try checking the telephone line cord that you use to connect your printer from the line outlet, replace if broken.
- alarm system or another device on same line, these interferes with transmission / reception of the fax machine. Try connecting the printer all alone and then try sending a fax.

2. Memory Full
- There is no space to store incoming fax messages. Delete all stored fax messages.

How do I receive faxes with the 240c

Hi,

Manual mode turns off all automatic answering functions unless you are using the Distinctive Ring feature or you are using an external answering machine on the same line as the Brother machine.

*Distinctive Ring is a function of your Brother machine that allows a person with one line to receive fax and voice calls through two different phone numbers on that one line. Brother uses the term "Distinctive Ring," but telephone companies market the service under a variety of names, such as Custom Ringing, Personalized Ring, Smart Ring, Ring Master, Ident-a-Ring, Ident-a-Call, Data Ident-A-Call, Teen Ring, SimpleBiz Fax & Alternate Number Ringing and BT Call Sign.
  1. Setting the Receive Mode
    1. Press Menu.
    2. Press the up or down arrow key to select Initial Setup.
    3. Press OK.
    4. Press the up or down arrow key to select Receive Mode.
    5. Press OK.
    6. Press the up or down arrow key to select Manual.
    7. Press OK.
    8. Press Stop/Exit.

Receiving Faxes in Manual Mode
  1. Lift the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as your Brother machine.
  2. When you hear the sending machine's fax tones (short beeps that occur at regular intervals), do one of the following:
    • If the telephone you answered is near your Brother machine or connected to its EXT jack(socket), press Black(Mono) Start or Color(Colour) Start.
    • If the telephone you answered is not connected to or near your Brother machine, press *51 (*91 for New Zealand) on its dial pad.
  3. Your Brother machine will produce receiving tones.
  4. Replace the telephone handset. Your Brother machine will begin to receive the fax.

< Easy Receive (Fax Detect) >
The Easy Receive (Fax Detect) feature allows you to receive faxes in Manual Mode by simply lifting the handset of a telephone that is on the same line as the Brother machine. Your Brother machine will automatically generate fax receiving tones, at which point you can replace the telephone handset and wait for your fax to be received and printed.

Your Brother machine's Easy Receive (Fax Detect) feature is turned ON by default. To adjust your Brother machine's Easy Receive (Fax Detect) setting, please follow these steps:

  1. Press Menu.
  2. Press the up or down arrow key to select Fax.
  3. Press OK.
  4. Press the up or down arrow key to select Setup Receive.
  5. Press OK.
  6. Press the up or down arrow key to select Easy Receive or Fax Detect.
  7. Press OK.
  8. Press the up or down arrow key to select On, Semi or Off. *In some brother machines, Semi may not be in the options.
If you choose Semi, your Brother machine will only answer an incoming fax if you answer using its handset or by pressing the Hook, Hook/Hold, Hold, Speaker Phone or Tel/R key on its control panel.
  9. Press OK.
  10. Press Stop/Exit.

Note Here are a couple of points to keep in mind:
  • If Easy Receive (Fax Detect) is ON, but your Brother machine doesn't automatically answer the incoming fax when you lift the extension telephone's handset, press *51 (*91 for New Zealand).
  • If you send faxes from a computer that is on the same telephone line as the Brother machine and the Brother machine intercepts the calls, turn Easy Receive (Fax Detect) OFF.

Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

I am recieving a comm.error when faxingit also shows memory full when the page prints

Hi

You usually get a Comm error due to poor performance of your phone line. Check for any visible issues with the phone line. Check whether the jack is plugged in properly and the wire is not cut.

If you are sharing the phone line then check that any other devices are not interferrring in device's performance. Disconnect any other equipment on the telephone line, i.e. answering machine, modem, extra telephones, switching devices, adapters, etc. Make sure the telephone line is connected directly from the jack (socket) on the Brother machine labeled "Line" to the telephone wall jack (socket).

There may be a problem with the way the Brother machine is connected or you may have a bad telephone line. Try resending again. If the transmission is successful, the problem was created by the connection of the Brother machine and the other devices on the line. Reconnect the other pieces of equipment one at a time to see which is causing the problem. If the error continues to appear on the report, try connecting the Brother machine to a different telephone line or have the line checked by the telephone company.

Unable to scan to email with gmail on a Brother MFC-6490CW

Use SMTP relaying. Set up a computer with SMTP relaying. Go into the Remote Setup Program for your Brother MFC and select Setup Server. Use the IP address of that PC in the Server Settings and set Auth for SMTP to None. Worked great for me. This document can help you set it up on the relaying computer/server. http://www.lesolsoncompany.com/InstantKB20/Attachment17.aspx

Brother Multi function centre with fax, MFC 885CW we have the setting on F/T, it answers a fax after 2 rings, if a call coming in it keeps ringing, but on callers end it keeps beeping fax noises, callers...

Hi,

I had the same problem using my Brother MFC 8460N fax on the same line as my regular telephone, which has an answering machine.

There was nothing wrong with my equipment. It was a set-up issue. I solved it as follows, and maybe this will be helpful to you:

Here's what I did, step by step:

1. Put your MFC and your telephone near each other, and within reach of a phone wall jack.

2. Go to the fax machine. Take the telephone line with the clip on the end of it that comes out of the fax machine. Put that into the telephone wall jack.

3. Go to the answering machine. Take its telephone line with the clip on the end of it and put that into the BACK OF THE FAX MACHINE. The port on the back of my fax machine says something like EXT TAD which means external telephone answering device.

4. Go back to the fax machine. You'll now need to play around with the menu options for the fax. My Brother MFC shows this stuff in a little screen on the front. Try and find the Fax Setup options. Next, try and find the Fax Receive options. If you do, select something like External TAD fax receive mode. Do not give up, you're almost done.

5. Next, set ring numbers on both devices, the fax machine and the answering machine. I set both devices' ring numbers to 4. I don't know if these are the optimal settings, or what happens if you set them at different ring numbers. I only know that a "4 and 4" setting works for me, and am not inclined to mess with it.

6. Final detail: the setup should be transparent to a voice caller. Someone who is sending a fax, though, might be a little confused IF, like me, they lean over to listen to their fax machine dial and screech, just to be sure it's working. Such a person may faintly hear my outgoing answering machine message before they heard my fax machine's screech kick in. They might think that they had a wrong number, cancel the fax, try again, call me with questions, etc., etc. So I changed my outgoing message to something like: 'You have reached xxx xxx xxxx. To leave a voice msg, please wait for the tone. To send a fax, please continue the transmission and it will be printed. Thank you!'

That's it. Hope this was helpful.

Best,

Wilbere

How to receive faxes automatically

First this is a good machine, I use the same one and have my fax setup for the same thing. If you have a (TAD) Telephone Answering Device first you have to set up your phone to pick up before the fax, do this by setting the phone to pick up on three rings and the fax to pick up on four. Go to Menu/Fax/Setup Receive/Ring Delay. While there make sure Easy Receive is on. The machine itself will distinguish between regular calls and facsimiles and will display this info at the time of the call on its LCD screen, make sure you are using the line connection and not the phone connection. Hope this helped.
