Look inside where the water reservoir sits, you should see a small float. This float triggers a switch that shuts the unit off when it gets full. You want to make sure that float is able to move freely (not caught up on the edge of the reservoir), and that it makes a "click" sound when you lift it up. If it's moving freely, but the unit still thinks it's full, you may have a faulty switch.
