Sewing machine oil is a very light oil so it does not hang around very long. if you are a heavy user of the machine it is best to oil it every month or so. if when it is stored for a long period it should be oil then too. there are one or 2 bits that need some light greasing too. some 3-1 oil is good for the job and do all the moving parts lightly and not too much oil as it will mark your clothes. hope this helps.

Consult your owner's manual. Different machines have different cleaning and oiling requirements. Using oil in the wrong spot on an electronic machine could create major damage and repair costs. Use only fresh good quality sewing machine oil recommended by the manufacturer. Apply only 1-2 drops of oil each spot as instructed and follow the instructions for cleaning and oiling frequency.

I would put a drop before each use in case it has gone away.. Use light machine oil that is made for sewing machines since it is not petroleum based, and just put a drop so you do not get it sloping around too much. Also clean it up before putting oil on anything or you will be feeding a mess. The strings, dust, and fabric debris seems to fly everywhere and will stick to the oil if it finds it.. clean off then lube..

What about Oiling?

If you look at the Oiling Instructions in the owner's manual, it has a picture of where the oil should be applied. Only one or two drops!! It should probably be oiled frequently--about every 8 hours of sewing time. Pfaff probably sells a sewing machine oil for your machine. Just tell them your machine model and they should know what you need. Do NOT use 3-in-1, WD-40, cooking oil, or the old stinky brown stuff from grandma's sewing basket!

Where should I clean and oil an unidentified sewing machine?

cleaning out any machine is good , as most don't get \done get done to often , id be cautious on oiling a machine and only use a oil spec'd by the mfg. as some oils can soften and damage gears and such on some machines , oils should always be used sparingly and not left to drip down inside to points unknown , me id prefer to use caning wax for lubrication, as it never runs from where you put it like oils will

Can I use synthetic motor oil for a very old industrial sewing machine which has a oil tank

Probably but you have to be careful that the weight of the oil is appropriate - hopefully it says what weight oil to add. Adding oil that is too thin may cause leakage/dripping onto your projects. Adding oil that it too thick may cause the unit to run loudly and not get proper lube.

Also, some synthetic oils do not blend well with common oils and may form an emulsion (like mayo). If it is very old, using cheaper common oil won't hurt it. I would stick with the common oil unless you clean out the old oil from the tank.

Good luck and please rate me.

How to oil

some machines have sealed bearings and need oil only on a few external moving parts .. most older machines need just about everything that moves oiled periodically .. we need a model number to tell which you have ... use only oil intended for sewing machines .. other types of oil might become gummy after a while and make a mess of the machine .. if you can open the machine to see inside .(usually the top comes off) .. then anything that moves not made of plastic gets a drop of oil .. there are usually several places under the machine that also get oiled .. in general if it moves oil it ... dont get oil inside the motor where the brushes are ... if your machine has sealed bearings then you dont have to and shouldnt oil them..
