Recover windows after virus attack

Hi.. i'm using Microsoft windows xp professional SP2. virus attacked my windows and done a lot of damage to my windows though i have NOD32 3.650 antivirus fully updated but it couldn't remove it. it named ckvo.exe & ckvo.dll and i removed it manually by deleting it from registry and from system folders but now i can't open any of my hard disk drive, every time i tried to open it, "open with" box appeared. what should i do to solve this problem? i heard it can be done by just formatting one of my hard disk drive other than c: on which windows is installed. is it true?

You need to stop the service from running before you go any further...

click start>run type in 'regedit' then navigate to

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Diable it from running. You can also do this by start>run type in 'gpedit.msc' and looking for the entry there, then disabling it

Once you have done that restart your machine, then look for every file on the HDD relating to ckvo.exe and deleting it. Check your %temp% folder and registry as well. When you think you have all the files empty the recycle bin, delete the key from the registry and restart the pc again.

Check to see if you can access you HDD as normal.

I cannot say for sure if this works, but it it is worth a try.

Do a google search for Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, there is a free version available, I believe Cnet Downloads have it on their site, install and update then run it, there is a good chance that the program will pick up the virus and remove it for you.

The virus probably has infected the autorun.inf file at the root of the c:/ drive

Delete this file, which is a hidden system file, then restart the machine and try to access the drive again from 'my computer'

the autorun.inf file is a system file and is protected so you may have to do it from a command prompt.

Or a quick way is to use diskheal http://www.luqsoft.com/diskheal/download...

download it and run it and it will fix the 'open with' error.

Hope this sorts you out, let me know.

Try to remove with linux. You could best use the ubuntu live CD to remove it. It can be found here http://www.ubuntu.com/ . Burn it on a CD or DVD and boot it from your boot menu. You must press try ubuntu so you can delete the virus from your harddisk.
