MTD Yard Machine Model # 11A-084E029 Need help putting the pull cord assembly (coil, etc) back together. Standard repair books don't give enough detail. My pull cord broke, I bought just the cord, took the cord assembly apart and now am having trouble getting it back together. Is there a more detailed manual with pictures available? Remove the recoil assembly from the mower, there are 3 machine screws.
Remove the old rope and get matching cord, make sure you get the correct diameter, usually 3/16 or 1/4 inch, and type, I believe it should be nylon braided. Do not cut the new cord.
Use a match to light the end of the cord and once it ignites, use an old rag to pull and form the end into a point.
Notice which way the pulley in the starter assembly rotates and hand spin it in that direction until it is fairly tight. Once it is tight, rotate it into a position such that you can push the pointed end of the cord from the outside into the hole in the housing of the starter and directly into the hole on the inner pulley. Tie a tight knot in the end of the rope inside the pulley.
Remove the clamp and let the rope get rewound on the pulley. Cut the cord, point this end and run it into the handle and knot it.

If it has rivets holding it . You'll be better off ordering a new pull starter assembly three bolts hold it on simply remove 3 bolts put new one on reboot it on and done . those housings have a tightly wound coil spring. I've yet to see one get put back on tight enough.

I recently received an MTD Yard Maching 4.0 22" cut model 11a-084e352 from a friend but with no operator's manual. I need to give it a tune up. What kind of spark plug does it take? I'm...

http://www.mtdparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/OperatorManualView?storeId=10101&catalogId=19502&langId=-1 that's where you can find your manual. Just put in your model number, and serial number too and your manual(s) will be accessible.

Pull start cord got pinched. Dumb me took off

Yes you can put the spring back in but it takes patience. Wind the spring inside the pully first. Then install the cord on the outside of the pully. Make sure you wind both in correct direction. You probably should replace the cord while you have it apart. The parts would be listed by the engine brand and model number, not by MTD. Probably a Briggs & Stratton engine? You can go to their web site :www.briggsandstratton.com to get part numbers. Or you can try a place like www.jackssmallengines.com

How do I change the starter cord on a 22 inch mtd gas powered push mower. I have the intial housing removed but instead of screws on the starter cord housing it looks like rivets and I'm not sure how to...

Don't need to take it out. If you flip it upside down you can see the wheel the cord goes on. Inside the wheel you will see a slot with a hole in it . Get enough slack to cut the knot off and clean out the old rope.
The wheel has a coil spring in it the winds up like a clock spring.
DO NOT REMOVE the wheel if the spring is not broke. It is a pain to get back together .

Wind it up and then stick a screw diver though to keep it from unwinding. Line up the holes and feed a length of pull rope (3 feet or so long) through the holes and tie a knot in the end. Pull the rope and set the knot. Remove the screw driver and let the rope wind itself up. Put the handle on the loose end then pull just enough tension to tie another knot in the rope so the handle stay on and is snug against the assemble when released.

REPLACE PULL CORD

the part that's riveted to the motor isn't to come off. You need to take the flywheel cover off; that't the whole thing, and it's held on by 3 bolts. Once that's off, you can get to the nylon pulley. easiest way to do this, is to take the screw out of the center that holds the pulley in, gently lift the pulley out just enough to get a hold of the rope, thread it back through the hole, and put the pulley back in place. Then pull the rope all the way out, and hold the pulley once it's out. you can then either pull it out from the knot inside the retractor, or you can cut the knot off, and pull the rope out. now, you want to turn the pulley the same direction that the rope pulled it out, until it gets tight. Back it off enough that you line up the hole in the cover with the hole in the retractor where you knot the rope. push your new rope through, tie a knot in it, and take up the slack. now you can let go of the retractor, and let it pull the new rope in. when it's done, put the cover back on, measure out the new rope to end up at the holder on the handle, and cut it and put the handle on the rope.
