Hunter ceiling fan, replacing speed switch, what wire goes to the L, 1, 2, and 3?

I can only guess since I don't know what model or what color wires you have. Here's wiring for single stack switch on some Hunters;

L- black
1 - grey
2 - brown
3 - green
Hope this helps.

I got my craftmade ceiling fan about 10 years ago, the fan has now stopped working but the light works, I changed out the switch on the wall that was not the problem sometimes I will turn on the wall...

pretty sure its the 3 speed pull chain switch.$4.50 to $6.00 at home depot or lowes or hardware/elecrtical store.
how 2 replace switch.
1.turn off breaker to fan/fan lights, probably that whole room.
may need extension cord & floor lamp from closest room with electric, so u can see.
2.need 6ft step ladder to get up to fan.look see how to get to fan speed switch. speed switch unscrews from outside but body of switch is inside fan cover.
3. need to take fan off ceiling to replace switch.
4.switch has 4 wires, power feed into switch and 3 selector
wires that go to high speed winding, medium speed winding and low speed winding.
speed selector switch has 4 settings, off, low, medium, high.

about ac circuits , black wire is 120 volts, hot.
white wires are neutral return wire. an ac voltmeter will read 120volts ac with its red and black probes between black, hot and
white,neutral.
white= neutal=ground which is green. If wired properly and polarity was observed, white and green ground wires both connect to the neutral ground buss bar in the circuit breaker panel box and are the same electrical point.

black wires, and the selector handle getting the hot juice into the fan and white returns the used juice to the circuit breaker panel box.
If polarity was observed, you can touch white and ground without getting a shock.
black will jolt or even fry you dead, so make sure the breaker to the fan is off, so that the circuit is de-energized before you touch it.

PLEASE NOTE--- make drawing on paper of what color wires from the fan motor go to what color wires on the selector switch.
If the switch has 4 black wires, you need to put different color electrical tape as a marker, on each wire. or ,to be cheap, you can use white paper, scissors to cut paper, and pencil and write 1,2,3,4 on the paper and tape to the 4 switch wires.

that is: wire # 1 from the switch goes to the black wire from the wall--ac hot
wire #2 from switch goes to yellow fan motor winding,
wire # 3 from switch goes to orange wire from fan motor

wires are specific and NOT interchangeable.

go to www.ehow.com & type into search engine box
how to replace fan motor speed selector switch.

Westinghouse 3speed fan switch 77288

It's the westinghouse switch. Many results on search. I just wasted 2 hours playing switching wires all combos. Others suggested the switch from Lowe's. Harbor breeze #0033905 . Plug wires back in as you listed Black L, Grey 1, Brown 2, Purple 3. Works perfectly for $3.98 plus tax.

Others said you can call Hampton Bay and get the replacement also.

I have a 3 speed fan switch with 4 wires. The wire colors are grey, black, yellow, and brown. Where do they go such as L,1,2,3 on the switch?

Did you get a wiring diagram with the switch/fan? This should tell you which is which.

Each manufacturer has different color coding. If you didn't get a diagram, contact the manufacturer for instructions.

Good luck,

3-speed fan switch broke on Hunter model 28072, cat. 300 fan. Found replacement switch at Lowes, but wiring colors are completely different from manual. What color wires go into L, 1, 2, 3 positions...

My Hunter fan uses a Zing-Ear ZE-268S6 switch. This is NOT a standard switch! It connects L to 2 AND 3 for medium speed. It is best to order the exact switch if possible. Hunter wants to sell you the entire bottom assembly (probably expensive). I found the exact switch online at:

http://www.kenselectronics.com/lists/switches.htm#Pull%20chain

for $6.80 plus $4.95 shipping. I bought an extra which didn't increase the shipping - worked great. Hunter ZE-268S6 ceiling fan connection colors: L=black; 3=green; 1=grey; 2=brown. If you need a different switch on their page, just click the Edit menu, then Find, type your part number in the box, and click Next.

Hello. I really hope the 2nd grey is simply a faded purple or green. The most common configurations would be: L - Black, 1 - Grey, 2 - Brown, 3 - Purple or green. Changing the 3 speed switch on my westinghouse ceiling fan

If you are careful and take the hot coming into the fan from the power source and connect it to the colored wires one at a time, you will be able to find which one is high, med. and low. Then connect them. Hot in is L, 1 is low, 2 is med, 3 is high
