Door switch broke / replaced heating elements work but drum doesn't turn yet motor sounds like it runs and then is a smell of heat or burn? what is the problem Thanks

ALWAYS UNPLUG YOUR DRYER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO ANY WORK ON IT.
Sounds like your problem may be a broken belt, or the belt may have slipped off of the motor pulley, or idler arm pulley.
If you have to check/replace/repair your drum motor,drum seals,belt,rollers, etc.
If replacing drum seals be sure to use a good grade of weather proof cement to hold the seal/s in place, some seals are furnished with the cement to glue it in place.
Note: This method works for most front loading machines.
Remove the electrical console that holds the timer switch, start switch, etc. from the top of the dryer. Be real careful not to knock any of the wires off of the timer switch or other electrical connections.
Remove the lint filter and the screws that hold the filter housing.
Then remove the top of the dryer.Sometimes you have to use a flat bladed screwdriver to insert under the lid and pry up to remove the lid from the retaining clips.
Note: Some of the tops tilt backwards and do not have to be removed completly.
Remove the front of the machine, this will expose the belt and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley. Pay attention to the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt and drum.
Sometimes the belt will slip off of the idler arm or motor causing the drum not to turn.
Note:The way the belt goes back on is, as the belt comes off the drum has to be doubled (pushed together to form a loop) and goes under the idler pulley then to the motor.
While you have the drum out, I would recommend that you lubricate the drum rollers at the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil like 3 in One oil. This will save you a problem later with the rollers getting noisy, also check your drum rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them this will cause a thumping type noise. You will need to replace the drum rollers if they have flat spots on them.

Bad Heating Element
Most clothing dryers heat up and dry clothes with a heating element inside the appliance's body. Maytag dryers are no different and sometimes these heating elements break down or burn out, making the dryer cease to get hot. Make sure the dryer is unplugged and the breakers that run the dryer are switched off before inspecting so you don't electrocute yourself. The heating element is in the bottom panel of the dryer and is often a silver part which heats up when the dryer is on. Sometimes the heating element will be cracked or burned out, which means it is broken. Other times it won't look damaged but may not be working. Replace the heating element if this occurs, to see if this is the main problem.
Broken Motor
Maytag dryers have motors which turn the dryer drum, tossing the clothes so that air and heat can help dry them out completely. When the dryer drum is not turning it means there is something wrong with the motor or that the motor is not getting power. Unplug the dryer and take it apart to inspect the motor. Once you have found the motor, plug the dryer back in and use a meter to see if the motor is getting power. If it is, and isn't working, then there is something wrong with the motor and how it is operating. If the motor isn't getting power, then there is something wrong with the circuits or fuses which disperse power to the motor itself.
Bad Switch
When Maytag dryers won't tumble or heat the clothes which have been put inside of them, this means there could be a number of different things wrong. However, sometimes there's a simple solution to this problem: The switch on the door of the dryer itself may be faulty or not making the electric connection it should to allow the dryer to run. This is a cheap fix and worth troubleshooting before tearing your Maytag dryer apart. Remove the switch and inspect the two leads to make sure they haven't broken or are still transferring electricity. If they aren't you will have to replace the switch

Dryer starts but will not stay running
Hi,
This is what is probably going on. There are two parts in the motor that cause the drum to rotate.
One of them is "start" winding. It literally starts the drum's rotation. Once the drum motor has started the drum to move. The second portion of the motor, known as the "run" winding takes over and keeps the drum turning. When the Drum winding burns out. The same symptom is caused when the switch attached to the motor is also damaged. In your case, although this is rare. I think it may be the switch.
The reason being is that the motor has a combination switch that also connects one side to the heating element. In a nutshell, If you get the dryer not continuing to turn AND the heating element stays on. There is a problem with the switch.
If you get the heating element going on when you push the start button but turns off when you release the button. The problem is the motor having a burned out run winding. Either way, it is less labor intensive to replace the motor when you take it out. Doing it switch is not easy. Hope this helps. If not write back to me and we can continue.

My dryer will not run. I can feel the timer clicking; however, the drum will not turn or dryer will not light up. I think it is the timer; however, could it be he thermostat or thermofuse?
First things first
Sounds like your problem may be a broken belt, or the belt may have slipped off of the motor pulley, or idler arm pulley or a faulty motor.
If you have to check/replace/repair your drum motor,drum seals,belt,rollers, etc.
If replacing drum seals be sure to use a good grade of weather proof cement to hold the seal/s in place.Remove the front of the machine, this will expose the belt and drum, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers, idler arm bracket with pulley, and motor with pulley. Pay attention to the route of the belt, this will come in handy when you go to reinstall the belt and drum.
Sometimes the belt will slip off of the idler arm or motor causing the drum not to turn.
Second, the electricals
Check to make sure you are getting full 220 Volt power to the dryer, if you are then:
Check your Wiring
Often the main wiring connection from the house, at the dryer, burns and the connection breaks. In this has happened to your dryer, you need to replace the power cord and the terminal block inside the dryer to which the wire is attached.
Check the Door Switch
If the door switch or the door-switch actuator is defective, the dryer won't work and you need to replace the failed component. The switch is inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. Check for continuity you should have none with door open, and should have a reading when closed. If not replace the door switch.
Check to make sure you heating problem is not a lint build up in the discharge hose or the dryer,as this condition can cause heater/thermistor problems such as overheating of the heating coil leading to failure of the coil and burnout of the thermostat/thermistor due to overheat.
Sounds like your problem may be with the heating coil. Remove the back/or front just under the door of the machine and try to locate the air duct going from the blower to the drum. Normally inside/outside the air duct you will find the heating coil and the thermostats/thermistors. Once you have located the heating coil, remove the two wires from it and check the coil with an ohm meter across the two terminals of the coil.
You should read continuity across the terminals, if not you will need to replace the coil as it is faulty.
If the heating coil is ok, then:
You can check the thermostat/thermistor one at a time by removing the two wires and taping them together with electrical tape or with an ohm meter to test the thermostat/thermistor. (Should have/show continuity)
If the coil heats up then replace the thermostat/thermistor.
(Thermal fuse.If it overheats the dryer will not operate. It's located on the blower housing. It cannot be reset. A vent clogged with lint can cause it to overheat. You can test it with an Ohm meter or continuity checker, if no continuity, replace it)
DO NOT LEAVE THE WIRES TAPED TOGETHER AFTER THE TEST.
This could cause a FIRE, as you have removed the safety of overheat from the machine.
Right after replacing a dryer element, always run the dryer on 'air fluff' / 'no heat', and go outside to verify there's plenty of air coming out your vent system.If the vent's clogged, that new element can burn out very quickly

Sounds as if the motor centrifugal switch is stuck. Check to see if lint built up around switch or centrifugal mechanism on motor shaft. Rap switch with the handle of a screw driver hard but don't break it .

Electric dryers usually have a motor with a switch that prevents the heating element from being powered until the motor is spinning. In series with this are limit switches to prevent overheating if there is too much lint or too little air flow around the heating element. Also, the motors are induction or brushless. So the smell is coming from the heating element burning off some lint nearby as it reaches the high limit temperature and shuts off. This can be due to two conditions if we can assume the motor is running (has a switch that is closing to power the heating element). The most likely condition is that the drive belt is off the pulley or broken and the drum is not turning. You will be able to tell this easily by sounds or by opening the door to see the drum slowing down. If that's not it, examine the blower which forces air through the drum. There are a lot of variations, so look for air intake and drum exhaust ports that can be clogged with a sock, lint, etc.

Hoover Condensing dryer malfunction
Hi Mike,

The motor probably has experienced locked rotor current and fried the windings. Of course the capacitor could have shorted. If you can find it, look at the capacitor and if the can looks like it's lid is swollen or pooched out, then go for replacing the Capacitor. If you remove the motor and smell the case and it smells burned, you motor is shot. It does not have to lock down to be bad. The windings do not rotate in an AC motor.
