If definitely sounds like you have a door latch problem. Slamming the door repeatedly, however, is probably doing more harm than good. You may be able to get the door to work intermittently for now, but eventually, the lock will stop working altogether.
You are correct. The part numbers ARE based on the Serial Number (series) when it comes to Maytag appliances. If a series is listed next to a part (series 10, for example), the part applies to all appliances that have a serial number beginning with "10" or higher. If an additional series is listed (20, for example), the part applies to all appliance that have a serial number beginning with "20" and higher.
EXAMPLE:
Series 10 (serial numbers beginning with "10 to "19")
Series 20 (serial numbers beginning with "20" to "29")
Series 30 (serial numbers beginning with "30 to "39")
So...using YOUR appliance serial number for this example, if you had a part that had several series listings, you would use the one that matches nearest to your serial number. Say, for example you had a door latch that had three different versions (series 10, 20 and 30). You would use series 30, as the number is the closest to the beginning two digits in your serial number. If your serial number began with "19", for example, you would use series "10", because the first two digits in your serial number do not exceed "20". If only one series number is listed, or if no series number is listed, it applies to ALL washers under that particular model number regardless of serial number. Confused now? So am I.
Based on the information you've provided, the part number for a replacement latch assembly for your washer is: 22004435.
You can purchase replacement parts at any of the following websites:
searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com
The first three sites on the list also inclide helpful exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly identifying any parts you may need. There are also helpful wiring diagrams included on some sites. Prices vary, so shop and compare.
NOTE: If your model number is not listed on some sites, use the part number from the Sears site as your search criteria. Sometimes certain model numbers do not always appear on parts websites (due to the appliance being too old, recently added model, etc.), but the part numbers generally will, because many parts are interchangeable between model numbers. If you have any questions, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.
Thanks for responding. Yes I am confused.
Some of the sites don't show series numbers.
Another shows a Series 10 and a Series B4 for the part in question.
My serial number starts with 74 so that would mean I should look for a Series 70 if available, or the closest series that does not exceed my series. Does B4 exceed my series?
The series numbers are alpha-numeric. Once the serial numbers run their sequence of number designations, they will go to letters. So, in this case "B4" exceeds your series. Since your serial number begins with "74", you would use parts listed as series "70" or less. Any individual parts that have only one series number listed (or no series number) will still apply to your washer as long as it is not a number higher than your series, or an letter designition. In your case all parts up to series "70", but less than series "80", if that series even exists. If there are two parts listed with different series designations, use the one that is the closest to your series. For example: If there were several parts listed with series10, series 20, series 50 and series B4. You would use the series 50, because it is the next closest series to your model washer.
I apologize if this is confusing, but it confuses tehcnicians sometimes as well. This is one of the reasons I hate ordering parts for Maytag appliances sometimes. If in doubt, let me know what websource you are looking at and the part number and I can make the determination for you.
The part in question you are referring to should the SERIES 10 part.
Just wanted to thank jsrock516 for the advice on ordering the correct part. The part for my washer cost approximately $55.00. Took about 15 minutes to install. Needed a screwdriver and a socket wrench. Looked at a YouTube video to see how open the machine to get to the latch. Once I unplugged the machine and had the top of the washer open, it was really just: remove 2 screws, pull four of those quick connect plugs, slide out the old latch, slide in the new latch, feed the emergency release string, plug in the four quick connect plugs, replace the two screws, reattach top, front panel and door. Very easy. My son's lego sets are more difficult. Thanks for all your help.
Awesome! Glad you were able to resolve your appliance problem(s) without a major expense and hours of labor.
