Hello my name is Chuck and I have a craftsman 2 riding mower. The problem is I need to find out where a wire goes. the wire runs from under the fly wheel cover to just past the selinoid switch. The single wire has a plug on the end but it looks like some of it is gone. it hooks into a double prong female plug with 2 round holes inside a square connector. Could you please tell me what this is and how to hook it back up without buying a new connector. please note that the person i got the mower from said that the wire got a little hot. this is a craftsman 2 18hp 6 speed with 44" cut. Thanks Chuck

If the wire comes from under the flywheel it is most likely the stator lead that goes to the rectifier/regulator for charging the battery...if the cust. said this was getting hot then there may be a short circuit in the charging system or the rectifier/regulator may be defective...if this model does not have a rectifier/regulator on it , then the lead most likely goes to the headlamps to power them up(only while running)

Whats the air gap on a craftsman 247.290000

.012 or Easy way to set that is to put a piece of electrical tape over the magnet on the fly wheel and rotate the fly wheel till it is under the magneto and then loosen the magneto bolts till you can slide the magneto up against the tape, Tighten the bolts, rotate the flywheel out of position and remove the tape. Rotate the fly wheel by hand to check for free clearance all the way around.

Why burning belt on 48" Craftsman riding mower

Since you mentioned "48-inch riding mower" let's assume your question is about the mower deck and not the overall mower or its main drive belt (if manual shift-on-the-fly model). If the belt burns that means it is running but slipping against something; or that the drive sheave us turning against an impeded belt. In the first case the belt will be burned along its length; in the second the burning will be occuring in one location(s) along the belt. In any case of belt slippage, check first that all tensioners (springs) are properly in place and not broken or fatigued and in need of replacement. The only other thing would be resistance to belt running, such as:
blade blockage; blade rotor resistance from lack of grease or ruined bearing in need of replacment; grass clogging on deck underside or under blade drive pulley on deck top side; a pully sheave out of round; an obstacle between belt and sheave that is preventing free turn of sheave and belt run; misrouted belt; an overstretched belt that cannot be sufficiently tensioned. Inspect and correct or replace as needed.

I have a craftsman lt 1000 riding lawn mower and it runs, but it won't go into gear it goes into gear, but clutch won' engage the gear.

Look under the mower to see if the drive belt has come off or broke. It is the belt that runs from the bottom of the engine to the rear axle.

Craftsman riding mower Model 917.270824

I do not believe there is a manual available to the public for troubleshooting, however, you have at least 3 switches to tell the mower to stop when blades are engaged or clutch pedal released.

Seat switch
pedal switch
mower engage switch

The pedal and mower lever switches are identical, and have two sides, one for starting, one for blades turning. One side can fail. The pedal switch is on the frame very close to the pivot point of the pedal/shaft. The mower switch will be under the dash close to the bottom of the lever.

1) Locate and inspect the switches for broken or pinch wires, switch housing, or loose mounting, and how each lever or pedal engages the swtich.

2) This is a picture of the wiring so that you can get a better idea of location.

Battery won't charge How can I trouble shoot electrical

*if your battery wont charge,
1) you might check for an "in-line" fuse from the "stater" to the starter cyliniod . could be blown.
2) or the "stater" , which is located under the fly wheel is gone bad.. it will need replaced..(this isnt cheep)
3) make sure all your battery and cyliniod wire leads are good and tight.

p.s. IM TYPING "S.T.A.T.E.R." not starter..the charging mechanism is called a "stater" not alternater...f.y.i.
