I presume you are in a region 2 area?
There's several programmes that would allow you to back up your original disk theres a chance the back up will play fine.Same thing happened to me with a dvd from hong kong.
To the best of my knowledge it's not illegal to copy disks for this use as long as you own the original.

DVD says wrong region ?

hi Nigel.
Region codes prevent playback of DVDs in other geographical regions. If you receive a region error while playing a DVD with RealTimes, this means that the region code of the DVD does not match the region code of the DVD drive. ... You can play Region 2DVDs only on a DVD drive that is set for Region 2.

How do you change the region on a DVD?Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. What is the country code for australia - lg dvd recorder

The geographical regions are as follows:
REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
REGION 6 -- China
REGION 7 -- Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 -- Reserved for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

The end result is that DVDs encoded for regions other than Region 1 cannot be played on a region 1 DVD player, also, players marketed for other regions cannot play region 1-stamped DVDs.

Hope this information is useful to you.

DVD region codes are a DRM technique designed to allow motion picture studios to
control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and price,
according to the region. DVD video discs may be encoded with a region code
restricting the area of the world in which they can be played.
It is therefore this US Association that is responsible for the RPC system that
effectively divides the world into six regions for the purposes of controlling
and manipulating distribution within the global DVD market.
There are six different official regions and two informal variations.[citation
needed] DVD discs may use one code, a combination of codes (Multi-Region), most
codes (Region 0) or every code/no codes (Region All). The commercial DVD player
specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs
encoded for a different region; however, region-free DVD players are also
commercially available. In addition, many DVD players can be modified to be
region-free, allowing playback of all discs. Region code Area 0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1-6 flags set. 1 United States, Canada, Bermuda, U.S. territories 2 Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, Greenland 3 Southeast Asia, South Korea, Republic of China (Taiwan), Hong Kong, Macau 4 Mexico, Central America, South America, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania 5 Afghanistan, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho), Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea 6 People's Republic of China, Hong Kong 7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia) 8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc. ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

I have just bought a Toshiba SD590EKB dvd player and it will not play certain discs, it keeps on saying wrong regional code. How can I solve this problem?

Check the back of the dvd player and it will have a small sticker with a small picture of a globe (or earth) and it will have a number being one through to six, this will determine what region discs you can play in you machine. Ill list the regions and their codes, i hope this helps.

Region 1 - The U.S., U.S. territories and Canada.

Region 2 - Europe*, Japan, Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland.

Region 3 - Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong .

Region 4 - Mexico, South America, Central America, Australia, New Zealand, Pacific. Islands, Caribbean

Region 5 - Russia (former USSR), Eastern Europe, India, most of Africa, North Korea, Mongolia

Region 6 - China

Good luck.

Message,"This disc is not formatted to play in this region".

DVD video discs may be encoded with a region code restricting the area of the world in which they can be played. Discs without region coding are called all region or region 0 discs.
The commercial DVD player specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs encoded for a different region (region 0 discs are not restricted). The purpose of this is to allow motion picture studios to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and, especially, price, according to the region. Many DVD players are or can be modified to be region-free, allowing playback of all discs.Region 1 Players/DVDs include: Canada, United States, US Territories, and Bermuda. See below:
Region code Area 0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1–6 flags set. 1 Canada, United States; U.S. territories; Bermuda 2 Western and Central Europe; Western Asia; Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland; United Kingdom, Turkey, French overseas territories 3 Southeast Asia; South Korea; Taiwan; Hong Kong 4 Australia; Oceania; Central and South America; Caribbean; Mexico 5 Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa, Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea. 6 China, Hong Kong 7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia) 8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.[1] ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

Wrong Format

I have a feeling this might be a region issue. If your DVD is the correct region for your country (check it against this list)
1: United States, United States Territories, Caribbean, and Canada
2:
Europe (including British and French territories), Japan, South Africa, and the Middle East
3:
Southeast Asia
4:
Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand
5:
Russia/Eastern Europe, Central and South Asia, and Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho)
6: China
(7: unused)
8: airlines/cruise ships

then your DVD-player might not be set up properly or may be faulty. Have a look at the settings and make sure the correct region code is set up in your player. If you find a "0" as the region code it means your player can play all regions.
