Here is a test you can use to check the ignitors, Ignitor test. I also would like to you turn the thermostat knob slowly from the off position, When do you hear the click in the knob? You should hear it before the warm or lowest numbered setting on the knob. If you don't, replace the thermostat as it has failed. Need full model number to get you part.

Kitchenaid trash compactor bought in 2000; no model/serial number found. Compactor was stuck in partial down position; worked the drawer out and found cotton fibers wadded/stuck at top of the up/down...

at the top, above the ram, there are two switches. One is the reversing switch (should have 4 wires), the other is the stop switch (2 wires). I suspect that the switch arm is bent, due to what you just described, and fails to activate the switch to stop the motor when the ram is at the top position.
