Hello, my Briggs & Stratton generator, PP5000, Intec, 8 hp, Model 202412, type 0167E1, has lower power output, 180 Volts in stead of 220-230 Volts. Any idea where I should look ? Engine is 8 years old.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

Usually when you have a lower voltage output that is yet above 150 VAC the problem is as simple as the engine is no longer running at full speed. This could be caused by binding carb or governor linkages but more often than not the Governor adjustment screw has backed off over time causing the engine to gradually slow so the output voltage drops. The user does not notice it so much until the output drops more than 15% and you notice dim lights... slower running equipment etc.

Look for a circular plate / governor speed plate near the base of the governor lever but off to one side that has a spring that attaches to the governor lower end of the governor. There should be a screw with a locking nut. Loosen the nut and turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase engine speed. (You may have to barely loosen the pivot nut on the governor speed control adjustment plate to make the speed adjustment.... tighten when done with speed adjusment) Watch your output voltage and adjust the voltage to 225 VAC with NO LOAD. The voltage will drop as loads are added. Make sure to tighten the lock nut on the adjusting screw or in a matter of an hour you will have low voltage again from engine speed dropping. What ever you do.... DO NOT adjust the governor arm base attach point where it attaches to the engine.

Just so you know a weakened governor spring can cause the speed drop also. If the speed keeps dropping with extended use, you may have to change the spring that goes from the lower end of the governor arm to the governor speed adjustment plate.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Need wiring diagram, from alternator to plug-ins for briggs & Stratton (3500) Elite series Model # 030208-0

No wiring diagram available from Briggs. Try re-magnetizing the rotor. No AVR or Capacitor listed in the parts list.

Disconnect the wires to brushes ( pay attention to the order) and apply 12vdc to brushes. Positive goes to brush closest to the bearing. Start the generator and check for output. If output is normal run the unit a few minutes to ensure re-magnetization then shut down normally. After shut down disconnect the 12 vdc source and re-install the previous disconnected wires. Now re start the generator and test for output should be okay provide there is no problems with the alternator. If no output during the above re-magnetization then your rotor windings my burned out.

Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton 6200 Watt Portable Generator voltage adjust

Usually the cause of slightly low voltage like this is that the engine is not running at full operating RPM. Find the high speed adjusting screw on the govenor linkage and adjust the engine RPM until the output is 220V - 240V

Neighbor has a Briggs & Stratton Elite Series 5550 generator. How do you remove the generator from the engine. Need to repair oil capacity switch inside.

Hello; The Briggs engine front case is shaped to accommodate the internal mounting of the Alternator section. A service manual for this model would be very helpful. I believe you need to dismantle the back of the Alternator where the outlets are and then the outer case with the stator windings in it. This will leave the rotor ( the long shaft with windings on it ) which will be attached to the output shaft of the engine by some coupling device the you must dismantle. John

Did you remember to "wind" the cord when you replaced it. They normally have a spring type of set up that you have to wind before you bolt everything together.

Briggs & Stratton 12KW Model 040229 LPG Generator. 96 Volts @ the 120 Volts outlet, When I turn the house 2 Ton AC voltage increase to 106 Volts.

Can you manually adjust the voltage on the generator without load?? If you have 120/240 60hz output on it and you are not overloading the unit (amperage), then it may be as simple as adjusting whats called your gain setting for your voltage regulator. Obviously you are seeing what happens when it is set too low. Trying raising that setting until it becomes unstable then back it off. Unstable meaning voltage starts jumping all over.

I am trying to figuare out what type of oil to put in a Briggs & Stratton model 09415-0 generator

Hi b_fesperman,

Here is Briggs&Stratton's webpage with the oil specs for their engines: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/engines/support/frequently-asked-questions/Engine%20Oil%20Recommendations/

Copy and paste the entire address into your browser and the information will open for you. Note that synthetic 5W30 can be used in all temps.

Hope this helps. If it does, please place a vote for me. Thanks,

I have a Briggs & Stratton Generator 5550Watt model 030253 That is showing an output of only 4.6 Volts at the pannel. Suggestions???

Check to see if this unit has brushes and rings. If it does, then make sure that the brushes are making a good contact on the rings. If the contact is good, then your voltage regulator could be bad. This would require more troubleshooting.
