A 20 year old PC, who, id be like amazed it runs at all
a museum piece for sure.
i guess all shops in town told you we dont do 20 year old PC.s
much less 10?
that?
the service book is marked 1999... wow.
id pitch it the trash like in 1 second, i can buy used LT like
10years old at good will for $20 why mess with junk like this.
ever? its only going to be EXPENSIVE, !!!
it came new with disks sets, lost those?
H3LL i cant even remember 20 years ago what came with what.
wow.
i sure could fix it but why would I? ever.
it is not from HP but was made by the real compaq , now gone.
old has no bounds.
here are the relic hit points.
1: main battery shorted out now remove it and run on AC pack
2: the coin cell inside died 10 years ago , replace with new one.
3: the screen will be dead, CCLF lamps do not last 20 years ever.
(unless parked in attic for 10 years?)_
4: the HDD is dead, no HDD lasts 20 years so get one. put it in
costly.
5: get the win98SE disks and install W98, XP up are not going to work on relics ever.
there is no magic HP F10 or F11 key here, its not HP.
its compaq. and they used, a media (CD) install kit then,
3 disks to make reload 98 plus all drivers for it on CD.
wow.
On startup hit F12 or F8 to bring up diagnostic menu, from there check to see what drive is set for the default that it reads when booting up I suspect it is looking for a disk so once you insert you should be fine. You will then want to go back in again and change the default to your c drive.
Xp will not install in place of 98. the hardware is too old. Set bios to boot from disk. If you have a rescue disk boot to safe mode and see what the problem is.

THE BEST SOLUTION IS TO FORMAT IT AND REINSTALL THE OPERATING SYSTEM. IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO SO, BETTER CONTACT YOUR SYSTEM VENDOR OR IT PROFESSIONAL.
SOURCE: presario 1275 win xp sp2 restore and system recovery disks
The presario 1275 was made in 1999, and it is more than likely the CMOS battery. this was the problem on a unit I recently repaired.
Replace the CMOS battery. If you are inclined to do it yourself, you should be able to find instructions online to disassemble the laptop yourself. when you do the job, be careful with the metal heat shield plate. It has many grounding tapes which should be re-secured when re-assembling the unit.
You should be able to find a replacement at Radio Shack (CR1220).
