YOU HAVE YOUR DRAIN HOSE TO FARE DOWN THE DRAIN IT NEEDS TO FIT LOOSE AND ONLY HAVE ABOUT 6 INCH IN THE DRAIN

Your about right....and getting parts for a 1986 Maytag may be almost impossible. Maytag was sold many years ago and old parts were dumped.

I physically measured and used a calculator on line to figure the sq. ft.

Without a model number, but with the age, I can only assume that this is a Dependable Drive wash system.

This system utilizes a drive belt and a pump belt and it is recommended they be replaced together after every13 years of normal use. They are very simple to install with no teardown or tools needed. The belts have installation instructions printed on the package.

Other issues could also cause the same symptoms but the belts at this age is the 1st suspect.

Replace the lid switch. Open the control console and find the lid switch in the center of the console.

There are 2 bolts on the underside of the machine top at the front. Removing them will free the top from the body.

is the damper pad at the base dry.they need to be oily other wise the machine can vibrate badly.hope this helps.
