I'm the proud owner of a 2002 Ram Quad Cab that hasn't caused me any concern for the last 42,000 miles until this week. Seems the radio just stops playing when it feels the urge. For the most part, the radio comes on and sounds fine for about 5 seconds and then stops. I can turn it off and back on and again it plays for 5 seconds and quits. Occasionally it will treat me to 5 minutes or more of music before the volume drops about in half and then the radio quits. Then the 5 second playing thing occurs again. This happens when the truck is running or while the key is turned to the accesory mode so I'm not thinking it is a connection being vibrated loose. Anyone have any experience looking for the culprit? Or am I better off just throwing in a new radio from some electronics store? Thanks for any insight. I have a 2002 Ram 1500 QC where the Radio will play for 5 seconds then stops. For several days it wold work again, now it will only play for 5 seconds. I adjusted the fade and balance and noticed the front speakers have a very low output when the problem happens. I checked the wiring and speakers. (Infinity - 3 in dash, 2 front doors, 2 rear doors) All are ok. I also checked the steering wheel controls and power. I suspect an amp is out. There were several very hot days just before the problem first happened. Does anyone know if there are radio schematics available? ... [email protected]...
It sounds like a cold soldered joint internally in the radio. My advice is to buy a nice aftermarket radio with an MP3 CD player. MP3 gives you the option to burn music from your computer. In addition, MP3 CDs will hold over 100 songs per CD.
It MIGHT be a poor connection at the power connector on the rear of the radio. You could try pulling out the radio and cleaning the connection before purchasing a new radio.
