Sounds like a Picture in Picture screen popping up, but if you do not have a signal from another tuner, it will be blank.

Try hitting the PIP button on your remote to see if it turns it off and on.
Plus go into the tv menu and find the PIP settings.

You can likely buy a replacement remote here:
Remotes.com
'Universal' remotes exist only in your dreams; there is no such thing since the manufacturers cannot agree on a basic code set that would work with any set. None of them can control every function of every brand and model made.

HAVE 56 INCH PANASONIC REAR PROJECTION--LARGE BLACK SQUARE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN

Hello MCNJC,
Get your remote and go to the close caption in the menu or the CC button on the remote. Set the close caption to off, or set it to CC1 to see close caption. NEVER set it to TEXT 1 or any TEXT at all.

Best regards

Black square

Black square in the middle could be closed captioning. Light engine is approx. $700 to $1000 for the parts alone. Time consuming job to change - 2 hours - so expect a hefty labor charge as well.

Repair of a Mitsubishi TS-4553 46" rear projection television

I checked out past posts on your forum and found the answer there. The TV is working great. I did have a bit of trouble finding the cc in the menu, but finally found it and the problem was solved by turning the cc off. Now I just have to make sure that they don't turn it back on!

Thank you!!!!!
