Hi there,
Your TV is stuck in shop / demo mode. To exit this mode you will need to restore the TV to factory defaults then run through the initial setup again. Please follow the instructions below to restore the TV to factory default settings:
1. Press the HOME key on the Sony remote to open the menu / XMB
2. Use the arrow keys to highlight SETTINGS (the toolbox), then SETUP and press the + key (in the centre of the arrows) to enter the SETUP menu
3. Use the DOWN arrow to highlight FACTORY SETTINGS and press the + key
(FACTORY SETTINGS may not be immediately visible in this menu,, so keep pressing the down arrow until you can see it and it's highlighted, then press +). You will be asked to confirm that you want to restore the factory settings.
4. Highlight YES (yellow is the higlight colour) and press the + key
5. If asked to confirm the reset again, highlight OK and press the + key
The TV will now be restored to the factory settings and you will need to run through the initial setup again. Use the arrow keys and the + key to select your LANGUAGE, COUNTRY, then LOCATION. On the location screen, make sure you select HOME - if you select SHOP, the TV will be in demo mode again after completing the setup.
On the AUTO-TUNING screen, you can select SKIP as your stored channels are not deleted during the factory reset.
Hope this helps. Unfortunately, while it's possible to enter shop mode accidentally using the remote control, to exit shop mode, the TV has to be reset. If you need further assistance, please reply to me by clicking on "Add a Comment" below your question.

Hi Stephanie -
Thanks for getting back to me. You probably don't need me to tell you the TV should not be automatically reverting back to shop mode. There seems to be a fault with the main board in the TV.
This TV is still available to buy, so before I make any further suggestions, I need to know whether this TV is still under warranty?
Thanks,
BElectric
It's definitely repairable. If you could let me know your location, I can determine what the best course of action is. There is a firmware/software upgrade for this TV, which may solve the problem, but it's no available in all countries and it can't be used for TVs from other regions.
If there is no firmware upgrade for your TV or it doesn't solve the problem, then it's a hardware fault and the main AV board (motherboard) will probably need to be replaced. Again, I would need to know your location to give you an estimated cost. It's also possible that Sony would repair it for free if you take it to one of their authorised service centres.
Please could you also let me know the current software/firmware version of your TV.
1. Press the HOME key
2. Navigate to SETTINGS > SETUP and press OK
3. Navigate to PRODUCT INFORMATION and press OK
The version number of the firmware is shown on the third line. (The firmware upgrade version is PKG1.741EA)
Finally, could you let me know how often the TV is reverting to shop mode. Does it do it during viewing or when the TV has been switched off and back on.
Thanks,
BElectric
It's no problem - I'll continue helping you until the problem is solved - or there's nothing else I can do.
The firmware update is free and the version available is an upgrade from your current version. The upgrade has to be downloaded from the Sony website and copied to a 'memory stick' which you insert into the USB port in the TV to perform the upgrade. A memory stick is often referred to as a thumb-drive or flash-drive - you've probably seen one . . .

I will explain more about the software upgrade after I've established whether it's safe to upgrade your TV. Sony NZ do not list this upgrade, but Sony UK do. I don't believe there is any difference between the models sold in the UK and NZ, but I need to check on this before I advise you to install it.
There is also no guarantee that it will solve the problem, but if it's safe to install, it's definitely worth trying. The downside is, if you do install it and it doesn't solve the problem, it's unlikely Sony would consider repairing the TV at their expense. I think this is also worth investigating considering the age of the TV.
I will get back to you asap regarding the upgrade, but we're on a big time difference (I'm in the UK) and it's 4am here, so it might be tomorrow for you before you hear back from me. In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know your thoughts on upgrading versus pursuing Sony for repair at their expense.

Sorry - I missed your reply somehow.
Considering the age and cost of this TV, I would definitely push Sony for repair at their expense if it's possible.
If it's not possible, I suggest trying to install the UK firmware update before opting for repair at your own expense. I can find no difference at all between the UK and NZ models so it's definitely worth trying. It wont harm the TV and, if it can't be installed on your NZ model, the TV will reject the update without installing it. If it doesn't work, there is nothing lost. I'll provide comprehensive instructions for the firmware update if required, but you will need to buy or borrow a memory stick. You should be able to get one for $15, possibly less.
Let me know what happens with Sony and we'll go from there.

BElectric

Hi,
Its not stil under warranty. It was 1 year warranty. TV purchased in December 2009.
Does this mean it not repairable?

Thanks for always answering me,
I appreciate it. I am located in the city of Auckland, country, New Zealand.
The current software/firmware version of the TV is 1.424AA.
How do I obtain the firmware upgrade version? Do you buy this ? Is this what it means by insert USB stick when you look at upgrade?
The TV is reverting to shop mode during viewing and also when we switch it on and off!
Thanks

Thinking about what you said, I may call Sony NZ tomorrow and see what they say.
I'll email you back after that.
