This sound like you have a tape stuck in the VCR. you should goto a Video engineer to get it taken out.
And then check it out to see what is going wrong.

Something is causing the electronics to think that the mechanism is faulty. It will shut down the system if it thinks that, to prevent tape damage. You need to check for any kind of damage to the mechanism. I know you say you have looked, but check again. If you don't find anything. I would replace the VCR mode switch. You might get away with a spray of Servisol Video 40 on it, but if you can replace it. You will need the service manual for that. As they are tricky to set up.
you have a faulty SYSCON MICROCONTROLLER.+faulty associates circuits, like CLKS, RESET. you must go to the repair shop TV for fix it. However you can try as the last thing before to go the repair shopt, Clean tHE VHS+DVD, with tape cleaner+disc cleaner too.and Proof God bless you.
something maybe broken on the inside for it to say play but fast forward. the botton could be stuck as well. maybe open the vcr and clean it all up in side. that might help
There should be a rewind button on the front of the main unit (usually indicated by either REW or 2 arrows pointing to the left), this should be next to the fast forward (again indicated by either F-FWD or 2 arrows pointing to the right) as well as PLAY and STOP - for the VCR. The only thing you would need the remote for is to set the clock and/or perform setup for the DVD player as well as timer recording. Try a universal remote which will make fast forward, play, stop, record (to VHS) and rewind easier.
There is a part that is called an idler wheel assembly that is critical for play, rewind, and fast forward, and may have stopped working. The second possibility is that the drive belt that runs the idler assembly has broken or come off.
There are only 2 motors on the VCR sections.1 motor for the rewind backward and speed foward.1 motor for take in the VHS tape and eject the tape.The play button also used the same rewind backward and speed forward motor to push the film foward to the VCR play head head drums to play the tape.
