Need a belt kit for X 7R reel to reel tape deck twin capstan drive

Gary hi! I am not sure whether your machine is solenoid controlled but if it is then I would suspect the solenoid that operate the capstan roller to be overheating, I had the very same problem with my Studer and Revoxes and when I smeared some heat sink compound (Available from electronic stores selling components like Radio Shack etc.) and fit if the chassis is cast aluminium like the better manufacturers use,as a heat sink. You can chech the belts and the lubrication of the drive system but I doubt that. Clean the capstan roller with denatured alcohol or cleaning alcohol.

You do not mention the brand or model number which to answer the question effectively is needed- different machines are designed in different ways. The function of the fast wind and the play mode only differs in that in play a capstan is involved that regulates the speed and the reel motors just do the take-up of taper and a little back tension for the supply reel. You may have either a sticky Pinch Roller linkage or a non- rotating capstan shaft that might point to a loose or broken capstan drive belt. There are also the condition of the Pinch Roller surface and the surface of the Capstan shaft that can be glazed or rubber hard and non-compliant. The rubber Pinch Roller can be re-rubbered, the capstan shaft can be reconditioned and the Capstan Belt can be replaced. Capstan bearings and motor bearings need oil once a year as well. I hope this helped to some extent- I have been working on decks now for better than 40 years.

This makes me think the Capstan Shaft is not turning either due to a broken or stretched belt or that the capstan motor itself has stopped working. This may be a job for a Technician. You first determine if the Capstan is turning or not- this is the metal post that contacts the Pinch Roller that rotates and is the way the deck gets it's speed regulation. If it is not turning look inside the deck from the side to see if the flywheel is turning and that the belt is on that flywheel. Lastly make sure the capstan motor is turning.
Beyond that a Tech may have to take over from there. I am in the Chicago area and can repair it if you are close. Many people send me units from all over the USA anyway.

Without physically looking at the cassette deck myself, I cannot be 100% sure the tape is wrapped around the pinch roller and capstan. The capstan is the chrome rod which the rubber pinch roller pushes to regulate the speed of the tape moving across the head. However it is approximately a 90% chance the take up reel for the tape stopped working from a bad tape or a loose belt which drives the tape take up reel. The clicking sounds like it could be the auto reverse solenoid because it thinks the tape has reached the end of play. The fun part is to remove the tape which you may have to disassemble the front panel if you cannot gain access to the tape from the top or bottom. You will need to cut the tape and remove it from the capstan and pinch roller to open the cassette door. Sometimes you can remove the capstan to free the tape. Once you have cleaned all the tape out of the unit make sure the belt for the take-up is good. If it is glazed, cracked, loose or broken order a belt. Clean all the pulleys and capstan and replace the belt. Your unit should be functional after the above procedure.

Ebay is the worse place to get belts- why do I know this? Well, as a servicer I am constantly replacing belts that are from E bay when clients can not get their decks to work with those wrong belts. While the counter belt is not critical the capstan belts are in a dual capstan system. The 32-2B is a X10 derivative so it will need proper servicing to work well. Just measure the diameter in MM and put the result into google with the words 'cassette drive belt'. Belts are not maker specfic.

The model is not a DX44 as that is a dBx unit attached to either a Tascam 44 or 40-4. The tape deck model would need to be determined and when that is done go to Marrs Communications and order the belt kit for that machine and you will get the capstan and counter belt.

FF and Rewind are functions of the reels, not the capstans. If the reels fail to rotate in response to capstan-driven tape motion the unit will assume a broken tape or end of tape. I think you have a mechanical reel drive system failure. Take it to a shop for evaluation and correction.
