I recently formatted my computer and keep windows xp. However, when I got to the Device Manager to see if anything was missing, I saw a yellow exclamation mark next to "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" and Multimedia audio controller. I don't have the CD for the drivers but the computer works just fine.

The exclamation mark means you don't have the proper driver installed and the device may or may not work properly. If you don't have the driver CD's you will have to find the driver by searching the internet for it, download it, and install it. The hardest part can be finding the proper make and model of the device. If you know that already, it should be easy. For example if your VGA card is a ATI VGA Wonder, search for that. If you don't know, there is a means of finding it. In the same device manager where you saw the exclamation marks, click on Properties for the device, then click on the Details tab. You will see something like PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_01DF&SUBSYS.......... Use this string (yours, not my example) in your internet search and you will probably find the vendor, make and model, then you can search for a driver. Once you have the proper driver downloaded, go back into the Device Manager and click on the Driver tab of the device's properties. There is a button labeled Update Driver that starts a wizard, which will let you choose the driver you downloaded.

All about Drivers

A Driver is software that interfaces your operating system with the computer's hardware. Every hardware device has a driver.

If a drive is missing the hardware will not function as expected to check if your missing drivers in windows.

in XP

Right click on my computer select properties, then go to the hardware tab and select device manager, if any of the devices in device manager show up with a yellow question mark you are missing the drivers for that hardware.

in Windows 7

Right click on computer select manage, and then device manager on the left in the new window that opens. Again if there are any yellow question marks you are missing drivers.

So if your missing a driver what do you do?

well
if you bought your computer from a major manufacturer such as dell, hp etc all your systems drivers can be found on their respective websites.

usually they have a support section to their websites where you can enter your computers model number and search for downloads and information once you find the appropriate driver download and install it, and your hardware should be behaving normally now.

If however your computer is not from a major manufacturer, once you have determined what device is missing a driver from the device manager you need to find who made that device. This is usually done by opening up the computer and looking for a label on the device of some kind. Then you need to go to that manufacturers website and see if you can find the driver.

I recently formatted my computer and installed all the necessary drivers and such. It's just basic stuff as I'm no computer expert. However, when I got to the Device Manager to see if anything was missing,...

The "default" video-driver in Windows gives "basic" support, e.g., 800-by-600 at 256 colours.
Get a better device-driver, for higher resolutions, and 32-bit colours.

Is the computer's video-adapter "integrated" into the motherboard,
or is it a separate add-in video-card?

If the former, access the motherboard manufacturer's web-site, and search for a device-driver.

If the latter, access the web-site of the manufacturer of the video-card, and download a device-driver.

Install it.

I have a hp compaq presario sr2013wm desktop that recently died on me. i didn't have a backup copy to reinstall so i used my moms copy from her computer (she has a emachine) (i figured it was windows xp,...

hello, the reason internet is not working on this newly installed windows XP is becuase (most likely)you are missing network card drivers.
To verify right click "My Computer", and select "Properties", then click on "Hardware" tab and click on "Device manager" here you will see anything that is missing drivers has a yellow Excalmation mark (!).
NOw that you have checked which items are missing drivers:-
First thing you should do is open the link below on the laptop with the internet.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3300335

Download Nvidia LAN drivers on your laptop and find a way to bring it to your HP desktop, copy to flash drive, burn it on cd etc...
Install LAN drivers on your HP computer, restart your computer and test internet.
If internet is now working visit the link above again from HP computer and download all the drivers that are missing in device manager, install them one at a time.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you still have problems or get stuck at something.

Kind regards,

Can not hear any sound in speaker keeps saying there is no mixer device

Sounds like you need an audio driver if there's indeed a sound card or on-board audio device present. Will need the make and model of your PC to help locating a driver. Also, have you checked your "Device Manager", does it have any devices with a yellow exclamation mark?

Device manager is showing PCI Deice missing

Hi you should try the motherboard website for drivers. Usually drivers that come with Windows XP are generic.
Try going in to Device manager, Uninstall the driver and reinstalling the driver that you downloaded from motherboard vendor site.

Windows xp will not detect creative zen vision w

There are many possible reasons:
1) USB port is not 2.0 - previous usb ports are too weak for anything but charging - go into hardware device manager and see if their is a yellow exclamation by the USB port
2) You have not downloaded the installation CD with key drivers - download the cd
3) windows is missing drivers - -go into the hardware device manager and see if there is a yellow exclamation mark by the mp3 player icon

Creative's website has an FAQ addressing the exact question you have asked

If all else fails,

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
