When our Epson Stylus C84 colored cartridges run out of color, the printer will not even print black. The printer has a new black cartridge but still won't print black. In the past we have had to replace all the cartridges to get it to print black. This is a big waste of our money because we don't print colored copies. Why won't it print black even when the colored cartridges are empty or dry.
THERE'S A LITTLE ELECTRONIC ATTACHMENT YOU CAN PURCHASE THAT ATTACHES TO THE END OF EPSON CARTRIDGES, AND RESETS THEM. THIS IS UNIQUE TO ONLY EPSON CARTRIDGES..(I WAS TOLD). I DIDN'T KNOW THIS (EITHER) UNTIL I SAW ONE IN A CLEARANCE BIN AT A HOME DEPOT..I BOUGHT IT AND IT WORKS ..HOPE THIS INFO HELPS...
GOOD LUCK

Try changing it in the properties section under device settings
or go to color management if you have it and change the setting to black only,.

This is a recurring problem again and again with Epson printers: they are poorly designed, "freebie" bundle printers designed to sell cartridges, not do useful work. This brought to you by the same company whose 1994 California Supreme Court battle (Shoars vs. Epson) opened the legal door for employers to electronically spy on employees. If ANY company deserves to die in the latest economic downturn, it's Epson: lousy products, even lousier ethics. DON'T BUY EPSON!
