Thread the dip stip back in to get a true reading of the oil level. Either oil filler may be used to top off the crank case. There is only one crank case - the oil on one side is the same oil seen in the other filler.
The Honda engine manual for the 3800 p.9 has the instructions for the ENGINE oil check and says to not screw in the dipstick when checking ENGINE oil. The John Deere operators manual for the 3800 has the instructions for checking PUMP oil but does not specify whether to screw the dipstick in or not when checking PUMP oil. The PUMP had oil already from the factory and, assuming the factory used the proper amount of oil, you need to screw in the PUMP dipstick to get a proper reading (otherwise it appears low). The PUMP takes about 12 oz of 30W NON-DETERGENT oil, so you could drain the oil and refill with 12 oz and then check the dipstick to see if the dipstick needs to be screwed in or not (probably my next step). Any manual that doesn't tell you whether to screw in a dipstick or not is DEFICIENT !!
