I believe you hear the fan, the harddrive and other components of the computer run but the display shows you only a black screen. Here's the checklist of what you need to do.

For desktop computers:

  1. Check if the switch of the monitor is on.
  2. If the switch of the monitor is already on but still there is no display, unplug the power cord from the computer.
  3. Press the power button of the computer without power supply. Hold it down for about 15 seconds.
  4. Plug the power cord back into the computer.
  5. Turn the computer back on and see if the display comes back on.
  6. By then you should get the display back. However, if it does not, try to connect the computer to a different monitor.
  7. If the display comes up on the other monitor, it means the monitor is defective.
  8. If still, no display after connecting it to another monitor, replace the video cable.
  9. If no display comes up on the monitor still, it means the video card has the problem.

For laptops:
  1. Turn the computer off.
  2. Unplug the ac adapter / charger.
  3. Take the battery out of the computer.
  4. Press the power button for about 15 seconds.
  5. Put battery back in and connect the ac adapter.
  6. Turn the computer back on.
  7. There goes your display.

Motherbord run but not dishplay

laptop or desktop ??

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they might be faulty

make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electical extensions even something as small as an electrical fan and its lead can cause this problem

just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs all electrical power and data to continue through every working device and to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

make sure your graphics card is securely seated with no dust built up or in the socket

hope this helps you
