Make sure that you have no electronic devices especially cordless phones near the route(including baby monitors, halogen lamps etc)r. if that doesn't help, try changing the wireless connection setup from wi-fi protected setup to manual setup and change the wireless channel to 11.
you can do this by connecting your laptop to the router via an Ethernet cable first and then log on to the GUI page using the internet explorer.(default is 192.168.1.1). if you need more instructions regarding how to do this, please reply to this post.

it asks for authentication... what could be the username and password?

  • venugopal durairajan Apr 12, 2011

the default username is blank and the password is "password".. if that doesn't work try the username and password as "admin".. any of these combinations should work

What is the user and pass for linksys WAG16ON

To connect to your wireless router, the router's wirelesssettings needs to be configured with the SSID, encryption etc. and also thewireless cards in all the laptops/computers needs to be configured with theserouter's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicatewith your wireless router.
Connect a LAN cable from the Linksys to the LAN port on your computer.
Open a browser and enter the Linksys configuration URL
http://192.168.1.1
The default login = admin
The default PW = admin
You can protect your router by changing the default admin PW (write it down andput it in a safe place)
Go to the wireless configuration and set up the SSID and WPA or WPA2encryption.
Apply these settings to the wireless card in your laptop/computer.

Hi i bought the smc wireless router and i tries to connect it but i couldnt figure out how to connect it because i have a laptop and my internet is connected from my modem to my laptop but i cant seem to...

I'm unsure of the exact part number here but using the model number I checked the manual. This looks like it's just an access point which extends a current network you have. If you only have your laptop, this device and your internet modem it may not give you the wireless connectivity you're looking for. On a normal setup you would plug your modem into a router, plug your laptop into the router and set it up with all your DSL/Cable connection information as well as wireless on/off. You can then unplug from the router and continue life. with this one it's only connecting to an existing setup (another router or another wireless network) and extending it.
If you are looking for a solution to give you a router that connects to your modem and gives you wireless or adding multiple devices on a single connection I would recommend returning this and getting an all-in-one router such as this: http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/Routers/Linksys-E1000-Wirelessn-router_stcVVproductId97826160VVcatId551966VVviewprod.htm?icid=linksys-specs-e1000-learnmore-btn&src2=linksys-specs-e1000-learnmore-btn

Wag160n dropping internet connection(on wired and wireless connection

This might be an issue with the router it self or the service it's getting from your ISP. If it drops the connect frequently, you can have a computer wired straight to the modem and see is the same issue will be encountered.

If connection through the modem is fine, you might want to upgrade the firmware of the router. You can contact Linksys to help you do this.

Why does this keep happening??? Please advise...

Your modem is set to only allow one main IP address, which it assigned to your laptop.

Connect the cables through the router, then unplug first the modem, then the router.

Wait 45 seconds, then plug in router, wait 5 seconds, then plug in modem.

Give it a few seconds to talk to everything, and you should be good to go.

Setting Up a Wireless Network

You can still use your existing Linksys router with your cable modem. In fact the router your have is designed to work with DSL/Cable Broadband connections.

1. Make sure to properly connec the devices in your network. Modem will be connected to the Internet port of the router. Then, laptop will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router. For initial setup of your router with modem, you need to hardwire laptop to the router.
2. Press and hold reset at the back of the router for about 15 seconds.
3. After 15 seconds turn off the router and then turn off the modem. Wait for a minute.
4. Power on modem and wait for the lights to be ready.
5. When modem lights are on, turn on router.
6. There should be 4 lights on. Power should be steady green. Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port.
7. Checked if you have Internet connectivity on your laptop while it is wired to the router.
8. If Internet is working, disconnect laptop from wired connection to the router and check available wireless network that laptop can detect.
9. The default wireless network name that the Linksys router broadcasts is "linksys". Connect to it which is an unsecured wireless network.
10. Once you are successfully connected, check Internet.

Hope this helps!

My laptop won't work wireless

Use windows network setup wizard to help in setting up your wireless. The wizard can search for your wireless. Some people believe you gan get away without using Linksys's software & I agree to a point. However Linksys believes to maintain a good connection you should install the software for the wireless router. You can download it from the link below. Check out the link "Learning Center". You might find it helpful. http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859837401&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=3740137401B343
I suggest to all running a wireless connection to set up security with a password to keep freeloaders from tapping into your bandwith for free.
Luck!
