I have a Hoover pet cyclonic upright model uh70085. the brush won't spin, I thought maybe the small belt was stretched, I ordered the correct replacement belt and replaced it, I still have slack and the brush won't turn. the floor and brush adjustment seems to be working correctly. Thanks, Tom

Well, the V belt is normally fairly slack until the handle is dropped below 45 degrees, which is when the belt tensioner assembly drops into place. If turning the brushroll by hand when the vacuum is in this position fails to rotate the self propel pulley, the tensioner is not functioning properly and will need to be replaced.
Also ensure that the brushroll can spin freely by hand, as these have a tendency to melt at the ends and seize the brushroll. I have also seen the groove that the v belt fits into melt itself out of round, which can cause the same symptom as you're describing.
Keep in mind as well that while the rubber belt may appear to be ok, it does have to be replaced every 3-6 months whether it breaks or not. Even though it hasn't broken, if you were to hold it up against a new belt, you would see that the old one has stretched significantly: which can decrease the machine's ability to rotate the self-propel transmission pulley and, in turn; the brushroll.

Feel free to contact me with any further questions.

SOURCE: Brush bar can't spin

Hi There,

Actually I just answered a question almost identical to yours! The belt on his model continiously snapped also.

I walked him through how to check the problem, and he was able to get his vacuum fixed. It really sounds to me like your brush roller has gone bad as well.

Also here, another link to the exact roller brush that your model take on our website if you haven't already purchased one.

I hope this helped your your vacuum!

How do i know if the belt needs to be replaced in my hoover spin scrub

Remove the brush cover. Check belt for cuts or stressed areas.
Is the belt taut or stretched to the point of being loose. If you see
any of this replace with the correct size. Pull brush bar out of the
side slots and remove belt from motor pulley. Place new belt on
pulley and onto grooved area on the bar....stretch forward and
push back down into side slots. Remember....groove in brush bar
must line up with pulley. This is also a good time to remove hair
and other stuff from the brushes and bar.

Agitator brush won't rotate. belt is fine, replaced v belt but it is loose. thought the old one was stretched out but new one is the same size.

The brush spins around an "axel", try removing rotator & spray wd-40 with red straw into it. See if that works, but do NOT use on carpet until dry or you will get grease stains on carpet.

The brush is spinning (and has been cleaned), there is a new bag, but we get no suction.

The reason the brush is not spinning is because the belt is stretched or broken. You can get a replacement belt here:

The smaller belt remains slack. the tensioner does not pull it far enough to engage. rotor brush does not spin.

the belt has been stretched, normal wear. buy a new belt, they are inexpensive, best place to getis from shop that repairs hoovers, put it in your self

Belt Stretched on my Hoover Windtunnel Farrington upright model U6431-900

hi, In order to to replace the V belt the one that turns the brush, One must take off the bigger belt " drive belt" that goes over that hugh wheel towards the back. When a belt gets stretched they will not turn the brush very well. If you have bought replacement belts the bigger belt Drive comes 2 in a package. Then you have your little V belt that helps turn your roller brush over. Yes the belts don't last long on my hoover. For kpatr22101 When you rpelace that V belt it goes over the roller brush into a little groove on the brush and then over a plastic round wheel then you must put on that bigger drive belt that must fit over that hugh wheel towards back and smaller on in front. Yes it is hard to get on. the I hope this helps. Cindy G.
