Hello - I have a 6-7 yr old Whirlpool EnergySmart 50 gallon 5500 watt water heater. (Two control boards fried and were replaced free). Symptom now is not enough hot water. No 'error codes' are blinking on the diagnostic light. I have removed the control board cover and check for voltage to the upper and lower elements. After a long period of none-use, neither element is receiving voltage (normal). After some use, the current is directed to the lower element (orange wire), and the supplied water still properly hot. I then opened a high output (basement) faucet until the water became luke-warm. Lower element still energized. Shortly, a relay was heard and the voltage was directed to the upper (yellow) element only. All seems normal, except perhaps the upper element might have come on sooner to prevent the supplied water from becoming unusably cool. Is this likely an upper sensor that is no longer of proper 'calibration'? Is this device something whose value would change with time, or is it a type that would either be OK, or failed? (clearly it still functions enough to trigger the switching the system from lower element to upper). Maybe I expect too much, but this seems to be a recent change in our domestic water supply. I also notice that the number of the control board has changed (last digit)(my boards look the same, unlike other writer whose first board lacked a reset), and that the heater in stores is now supplied with 4500 watt elements. Is this an industry wide change, or has Whirlpool perhaps found that their relays can't handle 5500W? I have 10 gauge wire, 30Amp breaker.

1) Residential water heaters are non-simultaneous. Only one element works at a time.
Upper element comes on until top of tank is heated, and then lower element is switched on until lower part of tank is heated. Lower element keeps tank hot during standby hours

2) Typical Whirlpool energy smart has 4500Watt elements. Look at label on side of tank
If both elements were ON, that would draw 9000Watts or 37.5 amps, requiring 50 amp breaker and 8 gauge wire. V x A = Watts.
All dual-element tanks are 240V.
Whirlpool energy smart requires 10 gauge wire and 30 amp breaker so electronics are not starved during operation. If your wire or breaker are undersized, that is suspect for repeated failure.

3) Typical electric water heater heats 21 gallons per hour. First hour delivery is higher since elements heat water as you use it. Overall however, electric water heater cannot re-heat as fast as gas because gas water heater burner carries more BTU punch per minute than electric element. Gas heats about 41 gallons per minute, with higher first hour delivery.

4) IF YOU HAVE OLDER energy smart and installed newer board, then you could have non-simultaneous operation is reversed so that lower element comes on first.

I have 2 old Ruud 40 gallon electric water heaters that are 23 years old. They are 4500 watt elements. Can I replace them with new 5500 watt dual element units without worrying about wiring?

On 240 volt system the currant draw is 23 amps And on 110 volt system the draw is 50 amps . If the wiring can handle the above load plus the safety margin it would be safe.

Can i use a 4500 watt on a 208 volt system

Yes
Voltage and wattage printed is on end of each element
If element shows 240V 4500 watt, then element Wattage at 208V is reduced to 3375 watts and will heat 16+ gallons per hour
If element is rated 208 and 4500w, then element will operate at 4500 watt and heat 20 gallons per hour

Electric Water Heater blows fuse, but only every few years

Your residential water heater is not 9000 watts. Or it would blow the fuse every day and melt the wire. Instead, you have dual-element non-simultaneous 4500 watt water heater.

25 amp breaker or fuse and 10 gauge wire is minimum acceptable for 4500 watt water heater.

Why does it blow fuse once each year?? I don't know.
Fuses and breakers trip when overheating occurs on wire.
Each fuse or breaker is rated for heat, and over time, it will get hot and then cool and then get hot again ... this action weakens fuse or breaker.
To solve problem: install 3500 watt elements (and clean sediment out of tank). Wire will run cooler, and fuse will last longer. Whole fuse box will demand less power, and run cooler, and will last longer as a result. So there is less stress on electric service panel.

3500 watt element will heat water to same temperature, but takes longer. For example: 4500 watt heats 21 gallons per hour, while 3500 watt heats 17 gallons per hour.

Where can i get a 21dv50 water heater to buy

21dv50 is discontinued. This is ordinary tank-type 50 gallon gas water heater.
Amazon sells 50 gallon 22V50F1 Rheem water heater for $420 with free shipping ... but who carries the warranty?

Frankly you can get in-store returns, and buy same quality gas water heater at local box store since Rheem makes GE water heaters at home Depot.
Other brands are equally good, as AO Smith makes Kenmore water heaters at Sears and Whirlpool at Lowes.

I prefer the AO Smith because maintenance is easier.

Where are the heating elements on an 80 gallon electric water heater? Model number : E 2 F8 0 H D 0 4 5 V

I don't know that model number.
Tank-type water heater elements are located behind panels on side of tank.

The water heater label also shows element wattage, brand, voltage, serial number, and type of operation.
For example 5500W elements, non-simultaneous, 240V are typical ratings found on water heater.
5500 Watt would be replacement element size.
Non-simultaneous would indicate that both upper and lower element are not turned ON at same time.
240Volt is typical voltage for water heaters.
Serial number carries date-of-manufacture, based on brand.

try cleaning the top of the pilot light jet if you can get to with small brush then blow it clean with a compressor.

6 yr old electric rheem fury 50 gallon all of a sudden runs out of hot water. Only one shower of hot water now where before atleast two.

you have a couple things that may cause this. you may have a bad element a bad thermastat a tripped eco (emergency cut off ) or problem with electric suppling heater.if you have no electric backround or training you should call a pro
