Hi,
My Compaq Presario V4000 (v4118AP) laptop's right hinge (matel) is broken. I checked the maintenance guide, it list the part no 403922-001.
I want to know, can it be replaced at home? Or does it require some special tools (welding etc) to fix it?
HP/Compaq service center directly said to replace the entire LCD (costing 15000 INR).
Laptop works fine as data/power connector is in left hinge.
Any suggestion/help is welcome.
Thanks,

I had the same problem, they are very easy to fix, I did a search earliar and found some on the link below.

You do not need to dismantle to base, you have some star screws under the battary and one either side that loosens the small panel near the screen (where the power button is). The screen cover has screws under the plastic covers then just unclips, be gentle. after that it is self evident
I got the P/N for my hinges from the HP web site. I used "live chat" as my model was not listed, and got the answer within a few minutes. When I removed the screws from the bottom, I learned that no only those marked with a triangle but one on each side just inboard from the outside marked screws should be removed to avoid working below to remove the hinge screws. It did not appear that the screws (phillips on my unit) inside the battery compartment needed to be removed, but they seem to be marked and it doesn't hurt. I left the cable to the power switch panel connected and folded the panel onto the keyboard during my work.

I bought a pair of hinges from Ebay for the V4000. They were different than my V4000 so be aware of that.
You have to remove the 6 rubber circle bumper discs from the screen bezel to access the screws that fasten the bezel to the LCD. Be careful removing it. Wiggle it and pry gently one way or another until it snaps off.
The hinge covers fit into the LCD lid and their mount holes fit over pegs in the lid.
That's the details for the LCD end of the hinges.
I gave up trying to find the right hinges and covers so I and drilled and pinned the broken hinge.
I just replaced the hinges on my V4000. A thin putty knife made the screen bezel removal pretty easy, although the bottom left corner was the sticky point for removal. Replacement worked in the opposite direction - start with the top edge, down the sides and then the middle of the bottom. Finally work it around the hinges. When replacing the screws I found one brass insert had broken off. To examine behind the LCD, remove the hinges, lay it flat and 4 more screws at the bottom. CAUTION, do not touch the area behind the screen at the top.
