There is a reset gear in the cartridge that needs to be "reset" or replaced. I've included a link to a PDF file that goes over the procedure to properly refill and reset the toner cartridge. This is a document that is used by a company that does a complete rebuild, so you probably won't need most of the information, just the part on resetting the reset gear.

Try the following recommendations from the Brother Support website:

Verify you are using a NEW Brother toner cartridge

Swapping Toner cartridges from one machine to another or installing partially used toner may cause this problem.
Brother machines control their image quality for the most suitable print quality by monitoring the toner's consumption. If you install a partially used toner, Brother machines fail to recognize the toner's consumption correctly and cause this problem.
Therefore if you replace the toner, please use a brand new toner not a partially used toner from another machine.

Verify you are using a GENUINE Brother toner cartridge

For optimum performance use only new genuine Brother branded consumables specially formulated to ensure top print quality.
Printing with 3rd party consumables may reduce not only the print quality but also the quality and life of the machine. If damage is caused to the drum unit or other parts of the machine as a result of using non Brother branded products, any repairs required as a result may not be covered by warranty.

If you install a new genuine toner cartridge but the "Toner Life End" or "Replace Toner" error message remains, verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly.
Reinstall the toner cartridge following the instructions of the Related FAQs in the end of the page.

Note

Please confirm that you have installed both a toner cartridge and a drum unit in the machine.

Clean the Corona Wire

Please refer to the Related FAQs at the end of this page to see how to clean the corona wire.

Shake the toner cartridges

To distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge, please shake the toner cartridge gently from side to side.

If the problem continues, the toner cartridge may be defective.

Replaced toner but toner light still on .

You sometimes need a code to reset the counter on your printer. Which code depends on your model.

I simply have the error light on my brother 2140 printer. I have pulled out the drum and toner. I have cleaned the corona wire. I don't have a paper jam.

  1. Open the front like you are going to pull out the toner.
  2. With the door open push and hold the button the on the left side that the blue button normally pushes when closed.
  3. Release after 30 seconds. this will reset the drum.

Hope this helps. Happy Printing :)

We have a HL 2070N Brother printer that the toner light will no go off. We have tried new cartridge, powering off, opening the front and back doors while holding the GO button. What's the best way to reset...

Sounds like you refilled or purchased a refilled cartridge and the toner reset flag wasn't reset in the process. Here's a link to the remanufacturing instructions for the cartridge. Page 4 addresses how to reset the flag on the side of the cartridge to make it reset your machine.

My brother hl 2040

Your not resetting the toner reset lever. It's on the left end (not the fill cap side) of the cartridge. If you have a resettable cartridge on the left end you will see to white pieces. One round and one like a lever in a half moon slot. We will be addressing the lever in the half moon slot only. The lever on a used cartridge will be at the 3 O'clock position. Remove the two screws from the end cap and then move the gear to the 11 O'clock position. Put the end cap and screwss back on. Put it back in the printer and close the door. When the printer powers up it will sweep the lever across the sensor and reset the toner level to full.

Hope that helps you.

****Important Note****
When refilling, make sure you dump out and clean ALL OF THE OLD TONER from the cartridge before refilling. Brother reuses it's old toner putting it back into the fresh toner supply (along with debri) and slowly contaminates it's supply with paper dust and talc from the paper.

If you don't clean out the supply hopper well before refilling, it will quickly mix your new toner with the old toner and more quickly contaminate the entire supply. USE GOOD PAPER, NOT CHEAP PAPER and your supplies and refills will last much longer.
