Hi there, First of all I'm completely new to GPS and a friend gave me her Garmin 255W, I've managed to fine a USB cable which charged this unit which is a plus but when I go to checking out different locations it starts with my friends address as a starting location. I did go into Tools and checked Where Am I and it shows her address how do I change this? I did go into Tools and Data to change home location but doesn't change this info? I'm doing this in an Apt Bldg do you have to be in the car to do this? I know this is probably a silly question but I look at it as I'm probably not the first or last person on asking such questions. I don't have a manual but checked online but haven't found an answer to this question. Hope all this makes some sense...........

You can clear all the user data by holding your finger on the bottom right corner of the screen when turning on the satnav. Once the data is deleted you can set your home location by pressing WHERE TO and then GO HOME. As you won't have a home destination set it will give you 3 options

  1. Enter your address
  2. Use current address
  3. Choose from a list of recently found locations.
If you're at home, choosing option 2 is probably the easiest. You'll need to be outside so the satnav can access satellites. If you're not at home you can use option 1 or 3.

You can find the user manual for this satnav at http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/2675_OwnersManual.pdf

Nuvi 255w is not being recognized by my Dell

Hello,

If the computer does not recognize the GPS as another drive, then it is possible that there is a connection problem with the cable or the internal components of the GPS are shot.
Try the cable with a different device such as a digital camera or another GPS. If this works then the cable is fine, if not replace the cable with another one.
It is also possible that the Garmin support staff are correct.
The nuvi 255w is an older discontinued GPS and should probably be replaced with a newer unit.
The normal life span for a GPS is about 3 to 4 years and that is being generous. The battery life of the GPS can only cycle so many times before it becomes completely dead.

Hello,

Is this the USB data cable or is it the vehicle power cable?
Is it possible that you may have the wrong cable for the nuvi 255W?
The proper data cable is Garmin part number 010-10723-01.
The proper vehicle power cable is part number 010-10723-06.

How to connect my garmin nuvi 255w to a computer

To connect the Garmin 255w you will need a usb cable. If you don't have one that came with it you can check all your other electronic devices like camera, camcorder,mp3 player etc..( my mp3 player usb cable worked fine). Carefully and gently try each one. One you get a usb cable connect it directly to a usb port on your computer and not thru a usb hub. then go over to the Garmin site and register the unit and download Garmin updater to update your unit. I am attaching the Garmin link for you. Thanks for using FixYa

Garmin nuvi® 255W Car GPS Receiver. Problem: Reboots during Map

The simple way is to send the unit to Garmin they will load the maps for free.
If you keep trying - try this -

With your thumb in the lower right corner of the screen - pushing in - like there is an X there - [ push with your thumb before you turn it on] Turn it on -
when this screen comes up - push YES -

then try your maps.
If they do not load on your pc [ which must have the unit hooked up and a legit copy of the newest maps ] then send the unit to Garmin. They will load your maps for you FREE. 86278d7.jpg

My new Garmin 255W is not recognized by the PC when I plug in with the USB wire and therefore it cannot get charged or download maps. However, once I plug it in the PC it lights up showing that it is...

Try a different cable.

Believe it or not, this really could be the issue. I tried a camera cable that worked fine with the camera, and a cable that came with a disk drive, then finally a cheapo cable that I'd picked up at the dollar store. That one did the trick! Go figure.

Garmin Nuvi 255W

No, it may take a little longer if you are charging through the USB port. I normally have mine plugged in while driving, it charges and is in use too. To use GPS with USB. First turn the GPS on (without USB plugged in). Press Battery symbol on screen for about 10 seconds, a test screen will come on. Plug in the USB (bottom of screen shows USB connected). Tap EXIT to return to maps. You can now use it while USB is charging Make sure you turn GPS off before removing the USB cable

No connection to PC

Cause of all these problems may be as simple as faulty USB cable. I had initially bought cable on e-bay when i described problem below and didn't think cable was faulty as got the green loading bar etc. Subsequently tried another cable from a digital camera and gps began charging but no green loading bar etc. Finally borrowed cable from friend with similar model and it all worked perfectly: began charging, managed to register (and get the free 2009 maps update) etc. so problem could be the cable. Garmin sell it on their website for 7 euro but I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives in Electronics shops.
