I have a technics sl-bd20d and I have a constant hum from the left speaker when I turn on the phono. The right speaker works fine. I did ground the turntable to the receiver. What might be causing this?

Different cartridges put out various levels based upon their technology - make sure you are using the proper input for their output. A line level input 1V P-P won't work on most phono cartridges and will require a preamp to boost it to the higher level.
Hi, Yes your turntable needs to be grounded to get rid of hum. Make sure that your turntable, preamp and amp are all powered from the same point. Most preamps do not have a grounding connection on them and when they do it is normally on the same side that the rcas from your turntable connect too. What is the make and model of your preamp. I will check it out. To earth to a preamp without a grounding connection do this. Take the grounding cable from your TT and slip it in the side of one of the 2 rca connections as you plug them in. That will ground your TT to the amp. If it doesn't then swap the ground lead to the other rca. Cheers John. Styluscity.com.
Hello, You don't need the original ground wire for Technics
SL-BD20D turntable, any plain cable can be used for this purpose... you should connect turntable to your pre amp, should be a "phone" input at the back... here are some suggestions for grounding.... ---------
Plug in a surge protector to the outlet, and then plug all the components into that surge protector
Connect a ground plug to the
surge protector and then plug the ground plug into the main outlet. A
ground plug is available at any hardware store, and turns a three prong
connection into a two prong. Ground plugs help eliminate 60 cycle hum.
Connect the ground wire from
your turntable to the ground wire connection on the receiver. If this
doesn't work, looking on the back there should be a grounding point,
Unplug your
receiver.. Split a wire and attach one of the splits to the receiver
where you will see the text, "ground" or something similar. Attach the
other end to something metal such as a pipe that goes into the ground.
Secure with electrical tape. Plug in.
connect the ground wire to a screw on the electrical
outlet.

Get an external pre-amp. They range in price from 25-100 and more, depending on the capabilities. All over Ebay, and electronics sites. That will fix your problem. Hope this helps
Did you ground the turntable? Most of them have a ground wire located somewhere that connects to a screw on your electrical outlet. You could be getting hum from your pre-amp if it is a low quality one. Try unhooking the pre-amp, if that is the problem you won't hear the hum. If the turntable ground is the problem you won't hear music with no pre-amp but you will still hear the hum.
Make sure your ground wire is connected. I know Serato does not work properly if your ground wire is connected.
Also, make sure your running the connection from the Line Out of the Serato box into the LINE IN on your mixer. You can use the Phono Input also, but I generally tell people to use the line input to avoid any issues. Regardless of which input you use, make sure that your Serato software is either set to LINE or PHONO, otherwise it wont run properly.
is it possible to swap the left and right wires on the needle cartridge? does the sound change sides? if yes bad cartridge if you still only get sound from right side try changing around the rca phono plugs
