I have a Honda EM5000SX generator (Bought in 1999 with minimal hours of operation). It will only start in the "Auto" throttle Position. It will not start with the auto throttle in the "off" position. With it running with the auto throttle "on" it will not take any load without automatically shutting down. Any ideas of the problem?

SOURCE: auto idle on a reddy rgh11000 ie will not idle down

This sounds like the idle control solenoid has become misadjusted. To check that this is the case, locate the throttle lever and follow it back towards the governor arm until you find the solenoid. Start the generator and switch on the idle control while watching the governor arm where it passes near the solenoid, if the arm snaps back and forth you probably have a bad adjustment. To readjust the solenoid loosen the jam nut on the core of the solenoid just enough that you can turn the core by the square bit on the end. Adjust the core 1/4 turn or so at a time until the governor arm stays in position when the idle control is on, then turn idle control off and make sure that the governor arm goes back to the full throttle position. You may have to fiddle with the adjustment a little until you find the right spot. Tighten the jam nut back down and you're good to go.

SOURCE: Honda EU3000is generator will not start with electric starter.

I'd say your battery in the generator is going bad or bad. They are very small and do not hold a charge for very long. The noise you heard was probably the starter shaft hitting the flywheel cogs. I doubt any harm was done as long as you did not repeatedly try to start it with the key. Why Honda put a battery in these is because they are intended for use in a campground setting, where they would be used on a daily basis and the battery would constantly charged. Whereas people like us buy them for emergencies only, they sit for long periods, and the battery goes flat, and the fuel clogs the carb and we get the surging issue. That's my 2 cents. When I brought mine home new, I Sta-bil'd the heck out of the gasoline, this past winter, on start-up, the unit surges. Of course the battery was flat.

SOURCE: Honda EU30001 generator causes erratic pellet stove operation.

Ok Motors and the like generally DO NOT really go all that well from a generator, what load does the Stove use?, You must add up the cumlitive "Wattages" of ALL things connected, see your generator is about 3000 Watts, 3KW, How much "headroom" is there between the two? Whats supplied versus whats being used? Purely inductive loads, like Motors etc, are less responsive than electronic loads. I suspect that your generator is NOT providing enough current to the Stove, especially when "Other" things are connected. also. Look, if the, any, generator is 3000 Watts really you should only load it up to a couple of KW's, 2.5KW being about maximum. To do what you are doing would require, IMHO, at least, 5KW, to get the "Headroom" of current drawn over current able to be delivered by the generator. Also inductive loads loose heaps of power and actually cause a higher draw. So that your answer, you must use it well, inside it's rating, not right up to the limit.

SOURCE: I have a honda eu3000is

Hello. There are a couple of reasons why a battery goes dead, the most common one being that there is a drain on the battery which has to be located and fixed. You can upgrade the battery as long as you are sure that the voltage on the new battery is the same as what you have now. The new battery will have more amperage which simply means that is it indeed "bigger".

SOURCE: Have a honda em5000sx generator 1986. installed

My goodness I just saw your post and I see it has been around since Dec 2010. Your post appeared after I answered a much newer post. (site operates in this manner)

Anyway if you have a 1986 generator and you have 12V DC to the starter with the key on the most likely problem is the brushes in the starter PN: 31215-ZE2-003 or 31215ZR2003
http://ssl.jackssmallengines.com/jacks-checkout/shopping-cart.aspx?CFID=179837&CFTOKEN=92541317

The only problem I have is that I do not know if this is a set or an individual brush. Use the toll free phone number on the link above to confirm quantity.

Once you have the starter removed use some 220 grit or above sand paper and clean up the copper contacts on the starter armature and lubricate the bearings.

If you do a continuity test of the armature using the copper contacts your meter leads must be exactly 180 deg from each other (opposing) to get a resistance reading.
Reading out the stator winding is a matter of reading the + lead terminal to the case.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Honda EM5000SX generator - will not idle up when a load is placed on. Will produce power but will not idle up.

from your description and what you do , the problem is in the auto control unit
it will be in the system to reduce the rpm to idle when there is no load ( auto mains on off controller switching between genset and mains supply)
by turning the auto operation off you are committing the gen set to full rpms regardless of the power requirement
you have the option of having it fixed at an gen set repair shop or leaving it off and starting the genset only when you have a mains power outage
check with an electrician to ensure that it is possible to run it that way as if the mains power unit is not correct , when you start it and you still have mains power , it will destroy the gen set

Why wouldn't my em5000sx honda generator not run my rheem gas heater.

  • The Auto Throttle System switch needs to be in the off position.
  • If the generator has not been used for awhile than the fuel is stale and the generator may be slow in responding to the load change. Replace fuel with fresh fuel.
  • Attach a second load such as a 100 watt light bulb standard bulb with a tungsten filament. Observe the light as the heater cycles. If the light goes very dim than the generator is slow responding to a load change. Generator carburetor needs to be cleaned, tune-up. Run fresh fuel under load to see if carburetor will clean itself.
  • Try adding choke to see if richer mixture reduces voltage dip. Check manual for mixture adjustments.

My Honda EB3500X Shuts off when auto throttle is switched on making me run full throttle at all times. Cause? Solution?

if your engine shutting down, then your auto throttle is working.
when you hit the switch watch the throttle arm move on the carburetor to the idle position,if so you may have to clean the carburetor jet and fuel nozzle ports.possibly this occurs when unit has been stored for quite some time.once jets are cleaned it should maintain idle.

Have a EB5000X generator which has staring problems, aprx 8 yrs old and not used a great deal until hurricane Ike came thru here and it ran for several days with minimal down time. Afterwards I changed the...

If I understand the problem correctly, it runs fine after you cleaned the carb, but the auto idle will not engage when you put a load on it. First if it has a switch to turn the auto idle off try that. if it does not rev up, then the magnetic controller is stuck. There is a magnetic coil which is connected to the throttle and this either pulls or releases the throttle when load is applied. My guess is that this is hung up a bit. Look for a small round coil with wires coming off it that is connected to the throttle assembly. You could also try tracing the wire from the auto idle switch backwards. This may just be stuck in the idle position by corrosion. especially if you live in a humid area or one near the ocean. gently try to work it a bit by hand (when the generator is not running) and try a bit of wd40 or the like.
