Maytag Neptune MAH5500B Front Load Washer Logo
Posted on Apr 02, 2011

Just purchased a Maytag MHWE550WW01 front load washer and the door swings out to the left which is not what I wanted. I haven't used it yet, and the salesman says no Maytag front loaders are made with the hinge on the right. Is that true?

Can you change the door direction on a Maytag

Unfortunately, you can only change front loading dryer door directions on some models. Washing machines do not allow this. If the units are stacked i may be easier to switch loads, otherwise the dryer door may be able to have the door swing direction changed but without the Dryer model # I couldn't say for sure.

Planning to purchase a pair of 3000 Series Maytag Washer & Dryer. Is this a wise choice.

These days, everyone offers front loading washers and dryers. The things to know about them, is that unlike the old style top loading washers (and even the very old type of front washers from 20+ years ago) is that they function much differently.

First off, remember that you should only use He (High Efficiency) detergent and that the amount you'll be using is much less as well, so you'll have to change your habit of pouring in too much, as it will cause you problems.

You'll also need to get used to the different noises, or lack of, when the washer is running. Except for the spin cycle, you'll hardly know its running. Now about the spin cycle, most front loading washers go into "turbo" mode and get going very fast, which is great since it leaves the clothes barely damp in most cases when you take them out.

Now for the not so good issues with front loading washers. You'll want to also change your wash day habits by doing starting your laundry washing with the cold water washing first and finishing with your whites or hot water washing as the last load you do. The reason for this is that front loaders tend to retain just a little bit of water in them when they're done, and by doing the hot water loads last, you give the washer the best opportunity to keep any odor forming bacteria the least chance to start with.

Another key thing that none of the front load washer makers tell you to do is, keep the door of the washer open slightly when you're done with your laundry, as the door gaskets will hold some water and that is part of where the moldy smells, that many people experience, comes from. We've found that by doing that little thing, along with an occaisional wiping out of the door bellows gasket, keeps our washer from having any nasty odors.

Some folks recommend using special tablets once a month (Whirl-out), but I have an adversion to doing a "load" without clothes and hot water, and an cleaning tablet - seems to me that kinda of defeats the whole "less energy-less cost" premise of efficient front loaders. So by leaving the door open, we've avoided all that and haven' had the odor problems at all.

OK, by now you're wondering when I'm going to give you something on the Maytags you wanted to know about! Almost any front loading washer will do a great job and provide you with a decent working life. I prefer the GE, Maytag, Whirlpool, Kenmore, etc., but really don't like the LG's. My reasoning is that the LG's seem to have more issues with torn door gaskets and error codes than the others. While the LG's look nice and most folks buy them because they're so darned pretty, they are a disappointment in where it really counts, in my opinion.

So buy any of the American made washer/dryer units mention and you'll be very pleased with them, and by the way, the Maytag 3000 series, do look pretty nice too!

Take time to read your manual with your new appliances and you'll be ahead of most folks and get the best performance out of them for years to come!

Hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Door broken at hinge area on Maytag front load washer 24".

Try using some J.B. Weld on it instead of glue. It will essential form a weld and should hold up better. You might want to give that a try. Good luck and best wishes.

Need to replace my Maytag the door is reverseable. Who makes those now?

The doors are reversabe they go from left hand open to right hand open. Just reverse the hinges, put the door fillers ( triangle shape go toward the front. Remove the plug put it in the other sidel. Now take the metal door strke and put it on the other side, Then take the filler from on side and put it on the other side. Takes 10 to 15 minutes to make the change.

No need to purchase another door!

Washer door opens with hinges on the left

nope sorry but all front load washers are built with a locking system on the door and that makes them impossible to change the door swing.
the only thing you can do is move the washer and dryer position by getting longer hoses and venting so you can have the washer on the left and the dryer on the right.
