The motor will run hot/overload if wrong size or too long cord is used. Also if pressure is set too high (most set at 125 ~ 135 at shut-off). In-tank checkvalve will also have effect on motor by loading the compressor at start-up. Easy test. Run compessor till you have over 100lbs in tank then unplug from power. At this point try to turn the motor /pump by hand, it should turn rather/very easily (this test is hard to do if the motor /pump is completely enclosed, you need to be able to turn the pump even if by truning the fan blade). If it does not turn easily let all the air pressure out of tank and then try to turn by hand. If it turns easily with tank empty try one more test. Run compessor till the pressure switch turns it off. Then unplug machine and turn compessor again by hand, should be easy. If not easy then unloader / checkvalve not working. The checkvalve could be leaking air back from the tank loading the pump. Replace parts as needed.

My islandaire ptac keeps tripping the breaker what should i look at?

If it were me I would use an amp meter and take an amp reading of the compressor when it is fully loaded. then I would refer to my name plat. which should be located on unit or if you can read label on compressor that is even better. FLA is fully loaded amps. RLA is running load amps, and LRA is locked rotor amps. if your amp readings is close to LRA or higher than FLA then I would recommend changing your compressor, The last thing you want is a compressor burn out.
tip

Air Compressor Burn-Out

Small, easy to transport air compressors have become very popular over the last 25 years. However they do have their drawbacks.
The motors on these small compressors generate alot of heat as they cycle, especially under higher tank pressures (PSI's) and air volume usage (CFM's). They work very hard and run more frequently. In time, this heat creates increased resistance in the rotating armature windings (which act as quickly reversing magnets against magnets in the outer case of the motor for thrust to rotate). The magnetic force weakens, the motor gets weaker and hotter and has to work harder to do the same job.
When an air compressor motor seizes in it's cycle and hums or buzzes, it is over heating to a point where a thermostactic relay will break electrical contact (to prevent Fire) and the motor will have to cool before it will run again. each time this happens you are reducing the life of the motor by several hours.

To maximize the life of your compressor, use the following guidelines:

1.Always use the shortest possible cord and plug directly into a 20 amp cicuit when possible,no extension cords! SHORT WIRE+LONG AIRHOSE- electrical current is lost through longer wire and requires a larger gauge (diameter) to carry the current.

2.Make sure the plug contacts are clean- as with automobile batteries:CORROSION=RESISTANCE=HEAT=WEAR.

3. Should your compressor begin to stall during its cycle, attempt to turn it off or quickly or reduce the pressure in the air tank to reduce the load on the motor- while the motor is moving a fan blows air through it to cool it.

4.Should the motor overheat, let it cool untill you can touch it with your hand and bleed most of the air from the tank to minimize the start-up work load.

5.Remember to try to drain the tank after each use to minimize corrosion due to moisture and minimize load the next time you start it up.

Following these guidelines will increase the life of your compressor motor several months if not years.

Maytag Refrigerator fan came loose, not cooling now

Yes, the compressor can burn up. I would replace the whole fan/motor assembly.

After first full tank on air, and you used it, when it kicks back onto recharge the the tank, the motor runs slow and blows 15amp fuse.

Sounds like you need a bigger fuse. What happens is there is no load (air) in the tank so their is no compression and the motor isn't working as hard as when it reach's the cut off point and restarts. Now there is air in the tank which makes the motor work harder and that pulls more than 15 amps and blows the breaker.I would start with a 30 amp and go higher if need be.Thank You for choosing FixYa.com

WE HAVE AN ATLAS CAPCO GA 15FF MODEL AIR COMPRESSOR.IT HAS A PROBLEM THAT IT SHOWS THAT MOTOR OVERLOAD PROBLEM AND SHD NC HOW IT CAN B OVERCOME

We need to try to find the problem by doing a little trouble shooting. First check the amp rateing on the motor name plate. Next check the amp setting on the motor overload. It should be set no more than 10% above the motor rating. While checking the overload setting check all of the starter and overload lugs/screws to make sure they are tight.Next lets check the amps on the the motor using an amp meter with the motor running and compressor fully loaded. Amps at full load should be within 10% of name plate rating. If Amps are high Check incoming voltage. If all of the above checks out you may have something internally happening in the airend.

I have an Ingersoll Rand 80 gallon, 5 hp compressor. The motor recently burned up and I replaced it with a new one about 1 1/2 weeks ago. The new motor now has burned up also. Could there be a problem with...

Hello,
Yes it could be running (turning) hard which will make the motor pull high amps. If you installa new motor make sure to check the amps while running to be sure that the draw is not over the name plate spec. Could also be that you just got a bad motor... believe me it happens more often then you would think...

I am assuming that you have checked the oil in the compressor and that the level is okay...

Heater wont start makes buzzing sound

Thanks for your question,
Changing the brushes might help, but more often since you said its really stiff, something in the motor over heated and it would probably benefit you more to change out the motor, the windings could be burned up, at least you will have the peace of mind that you know your motor wont lock up again. if it were me, I would replace over repair, hope this helps, please rate this and let us know what happens, thanks again,

Poter-Cable 135PSI Pancake Compressor

Check the pressure switch, they can become stuck in the open position. You can jump it to see if it is functioning or use a multimeter if you have one. Assuming that you've oiled and taken care of it it is unlikely that it simly quit, but that could happen... check across the poles of the motor for continuity which will tell you if the electric motor is blown. ALso make sure the compresor is not seized...
