My craftsman LT1000 Kohler 16hp riding mower keeps burning out the ignition fuse. It was working, but old battery was weak, so I replaced it. The new battery's post were opposite. I accidentally connected it wrong and it blew the fuse. Connected it right and it blew the new fuse. Purchased a new switch on recommendation of Sears L&G salesman. Still blows fuse. What else could be damaged from reversing the battery? Model 917272059

Disconnect the wire harness to the engine. If the short goes away look for damage at or near the alternator rectifier diode.

SOURCE: Removing tire from SEARS CRAFTSMAN LT1000 TRACTOR.

You need to remove the black rubber cap from the center of the wheel. Remove the "C" clip from the axle and the wheel should come off. The rear tires will have a square key in it. Do not loose the key.

SOURCE: Smoking Craftsman Riding Mower

1st thing, check your dipstick up inside the cap part of it and make sure the O'ring is there and in good condition.
2nd, make certain when you put it back on that you get it on straight and firmly seated. They will only seat one way properly the other way creates a leak into the crankcase and causes oil consumption and smoking. You should be able to tell if it has been improperly installed by an excessive amount of oily dirt accumulated around the threaded area of the cap

Can the overhead valves on a 16hp sears craftsman with a kohler engine be the reason why it won't start and if so, can I adjust them

Valve clearances will also effect the decompression valve in the engine, if they are too wide the valve lifter will not work and the battary will not have enough energy to crack the engine.
