DVD player will play some DVDs and not others. I checked the regions on the discs with the player and they should play. On the back of the player it says it will play region 1 & no region discs. Some region 1 discs play and others don't. Frequently recieve an "Unknown disc" message. I also tried cleaning with a disc. Any ideas?

You could try checking the DVD discs in a region free player program to see if the DVD is playable. You could try Leawo Blu-ray Player which can play Blu-ray and DVD discs from any region. If the DVD discs can't be played on this player, then it's highly possible that the DVD disc is unplayable.

What kind of DVD player is it? Does it do this with all DVDs?

DVDs are ecoded with region codes to indicate what area of the world they are made for. These codes may be 1,2,3, etc depending on which region they are made for.
DVD player read these codes and if the disc region code does not match the region the device is made for, the player will not play the disc.
Region 1 is for USA so most DVDp players made for use in USA require region 1 discs.
Some DVD players called multi region DVD players can be set to play different region DVDs but they are typically more expr=ensive then one region players and the code must be changed each time a different region disc is played.

I got two new disks to-day with pictures taken from 35mm slides. They will not play on my zenith znd400 dvd player. I wonder why??????

check the region of the new one probably it is region 4 made in china.your disc is a region one thats the reason why it cannot play on your new dvr which is a region 3 or 4.go on the web and see hw you can hack the code or burn a copy of that same disc.then try it in your new dvr.good luck
