Amana AFI2538AES Stainless Steel (256 cu ft) French Door Refrigerator Logo
Posted on Mar 31, 2011

Amana AFI2538AES The refrigerator portion keeps freezing the fruits and vegetables. The chiller control is on the warmest setting and the refrigerator temp is set at 43. I have been raising every once in a while to see if it stops the freezing. However, it still seems to freeze the vegetables and fruit. What can I do?

Our Amana afi2538aes is doing the same thing. Had a repairman out. He called tech support at Amana. They had him adjust the "thermistors" but it is colder than ever running at 28-30degrees in the fresh food compartment despite being set at 46 degrees. Tech support also recommended installing some sort of "ice bin seal kit to take care of the problem" according to our invoice from repairman. Repairman was told that the ice bin in the fresh food compartment puts cold air out (to keep the ice frozen) which freezes the food in the fresh food compartment. I called Amana and the rep I spoke to said he couldn't find record of this being a problem with the model but tech support told our repairman "we've had a lot of problems with this happening."

I had a similar issue. I had a water leak and had turned off the water. After that, things would freeze in the refrigerator section even when set to 40+ degrees. I finally turned off the switch to the ice maker and it went back to working normally. Apparently the ice-maker was overcompensating when it had no water supply

Hi,

Air is controlled by the damper located in the top portion of the refer section behind the ice maker assembly. Make sure the damper can open and close. If stuck open, this would allow air to enter all the time and cause freezing. Most likely the issue is found the the damper has failed to close when needed causing freezing. Double check the temperatures to the freezer, it can"t be any lower the -2 degrees, but you can raise it to 2 degrees to see if this corrects your temperature issue. The software was designed to bring in air from the freezer to produce ice first, then migrate to the refer section, if too cold for the freezer it would migrate into the refer causing freezing of veggies and produce.
I hope this information helps.

Food (vegetables, fruits) on the refrigerater side freezing

Your model has a control damper inside the vent. The damper opens and closes with changes in temperature. It has a pig tail spiral thermostat on the side and if it goes bad the door sticks open or closed. Sometimes it is just frost but you will need to get to it. I will send photos and links in a moment, Thanks Sea Breeze

Your Feedback

the settings that you said sound correct, you do not want your vegetables to dry out and shriviel up. The meat compartment should be running around 31-33 degress to keep the meat fresh, basically that is the ideal situition for you. Do you store allot of ice cream ? thats the only thing that needs to be extremely cold (-10) degrees. Best to keep in a deep freezer not the one inside.the only thing that I use mine for inside is ice and food that is going to be ae real quickly. long term storage is best in a deep freezer that you have to manually defrost. That way it neveer freezer burns the food. Hope this helps out.

Vegetable draw is freezing the vegetables

if you pull out the vegetable drawer, you will notice a vent on the left side in the back. get some tape ( I use aluminum tape ) and cover the bottom half of the vent, that will help keep your vegetables from freezing. that should solve your problem. Joe
