How to Password Protect a Microsoft Word Document
If you are working on documents that are important and shouldn’t be changed, then there is a way to password protect them so they cannot be changed except by you. You can also make the documents unavailable to open unless the person has the password as well.

- A Computer
- Microsoft Office with Microsoft Word
- Word Documents
- General Knowledge of Microsoft Word
Step 1
Open
Microsoft Word and open or create the document that you want to password protect.
Step 2
Click on “File” in the toolbar and select “Save As”.
Step 3
Click on the “Tools” menu and select “Security Options”.
Step 4
This will open a “Security Options” window. You may now set a password under the “Password to open” box, “Password to modify” box or both.
Step 5
Once you type in the password of your choosing you can opt to make the file “Read-only” by checking the appropriate box. You may then click “OK” to save your changes and then save your document as usual.

Microsoft Word document is only possible when you have the correct password that opens the document. Encryption and security levels differ for separate versions of Word. Microsoft 2007 doesn’t offer any solutions to allow a user to

Step 1
Navigate to the location on your hard drive where you stored the Word document.
Step 2
Double-click on the document to begin opening it. A separate window will appear that prompts you to enter the document password.
Step 3
Enter the password, which is case-sensitive.
Step 4
Click the “Open” button or hit the “Enter” key. If the password was correct, the document will open. If it was not correct, another window will display advising you the password was incorrect and prompting you to try again.
