My Amana bottom freezer model # BB20VSE, serial # 0006289684, mfg # P1321301WS has become increasingly noisy when the compressor(?) turns on. This started over a year ago and now is extremely loud. Thank you for your help. Sandra Forsberg

Not neccesarily. A compressor uses a relay to start it and an overload to protect it. If either of the components has failed, the compressor will not start. The part number for the relay, overload and run capacitor assembly is 67005560 and can be purchased for under $50 by calling Marcone Appliance Parts at 1-800-482-6022. Keep in mind you may have a locked rotor on the compressor, in which case the part will not repair the problem. Before you do anything, call AMANA at 1-866-616-2664 with your model and serial number ready as the compressor, which is part of the sealed system, may still be under warranty.

It's noisy Noise can come from these areas: The inside of the freezer The outside back of the refrigerator The bottom of the refrigerator The inside of the freezer Self-defrosting refrigerators use a circulating fan to move the air through the freezer and refrigerator compartments. This fan runs whenever the unit is cooling. The fan is located in the freezer, as follows: If the freezer is on top, the fan is on the back wall, near the top or bottom, in the center of the freezer. If the freezer is on the bottom, the fan is on the back wall, near the top of the freezer. If the freezer is on the left, the fan is on the back wall, halfway up or near the top. Over time, the fan may become noisy--usually making a chirping or squealing sound, though it may make a loud groaning noise instead. To find out if the fan is causing the noise, just open the freezer door and push in any fan/light switches. If the noise is louder when the door is open, the evaporator fan motor is the cause. You can't lubricate or repair this motor. You must replace it. The outside back of the refrigerator There are three components on the outside back of the refrigerator that may become noisy: the compressor, the condenser fan motor (if self-defrosting), or the defrost timer (if self-defrosting). The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. You can see it on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. It is usually black and has black or copper-colored tubes and various colored wires attached to it. that is most likely a relay. Does the unit get cold while running?

That could be it.

either the compressor is under charged or it is near breakdown. compressor cost is almost the 1/3 of the freezer cost.

It sounds as if the thermal limit on the compressor is cutting off power to the compressor when it gets too hot. There could be 3 reasons for this. One, the compressor is just bad...should be covered under the 5 year sealed sytem warranty (if its less than 5 years old of course) if this is the case. Two, the thermal overload and start relay assembly is bad. They are mounted directly to the compressor (big round black thing) and can be changed for about$14 in parts (unplug the unit before replacing!) Three, the fan that runs in the bottom near the compressor that cools the compressor and condenser is jammed or not rotating for some reason. It should run any time the the compressor is running. If it doesnt, it need replaced or the compressor will do exactly what you are describing. Hope this helps!
