SOURCE: knocking noise
Check your tie rods and the drag link bar which controls the steering. Have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you are underneath and you should be able to pinpoint the noise location. I had the same problem on my 2001. Replaced the lower tie-rod ends and also the ones on both sides of the drag link. This solved the problem. Whether you do this job yourself or not, you will definately also need an alignment upon completion.

Generally no tool is required. If you use a "pickle fork" you will risk damaging the dust boot.
Have you tried whacking the spindle right near where the ball joint stud comes through? This will take a few good shots to break it loose.
Be careful not to hit the threads!

I would check the sway bar linkages, they are usually the first to go, and they are only $40. Its an easy 'do it yourself' project, remove the old one with torches or a grinder (with a small cutting wheel). You can also use a vise grip and sockets but it takes longer.
You can't tell these are damaged until you remove the part. I change mine every 100 000km or so.

Regardless of if it is a driveshaft or axle joint, the difficulty lies in your skill level. Personally, I know it would take me at least an hour, but I have the tools and knowledge to do this.
I can't give you a step by step, but even an inexpensive manual like Haynes has this stuff in it. If you have a problem understanding their instructions, I will be happy to answer specific questions you may have.

athere is a snap ring within the CV joint the nedds to be spread OPEN to release CV joint from axle, Once CV is cleaned and repacked with grease rintall onto axle by again spreading apart clamp. Prior to installing CV joint slide NEW CV joint boot onto axle, Cleanly intall add'l grrease and reinstall CV boot.
