The display on my Sharp R-820 BK convection microwave no longer displays! It flashed between the usual brightness and quite faded brightness for a few days. Now it is so dull as to be all but unreadable. The unit seems to function fine otherwise.
It told me everything except for how to get into the time display without disassembling the entire microwave. Any help there? It told me everything except for how to get into the time display without disassembling the entire microwave. Any help there?
You do have to disassemble the microwave to get to the display or to remove the controller assembly to send it to me for repair. You do have to disassemble the microwave to get to the display or to remove the controller assembly to send it to me for repair.

It sound like the antenna behind the plastic plate may be warped and touching the cavity. From my experience when they start shooting sparks it is time for a new microwave.
If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or
close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

The fact that the microwave and convection both do not heat indicated that the oven is in demo mode, check the user manual, otherwise it will possibly be a relay not triggering, may need a pcb replacement, check Demo mode 1st....Phil
This UK model is probably similar to the US model R-930 or R-820.
We have both service manuals at our site and while the part numbers will not necessarily be the same, they will be handy for safety, disassembly and troubleshooting. They are here and here.
