I'm having this same problem right now. Started two days ago. Usually always on EDGE. Now only GSM. But it has gone to EDGE for about 20 minutes 3 times since; allowing qued email to pass and other data functionality. Same effect over a 20 mile range in city.

My BB won't go back to EDGE from GSM

My phone was doing fine one day, and all of a sudden it changes to GSM instead of the normal EDGE. I haven't been able to send anything basically. I've tried taking out the battery too.

Mine hasn't gone back to Edge either. Ive tried taking out the battery, I swear I've tried changing it by going through all the files memorizing what is what, and also even hooking it up to my computer. I seriously doubt that this is a network issue more along the lines of a product defect.
The Curve apparently is having more trouble with the connection to edge than the other blackberry's.
The best solution I think would either have your carrier reset your connections and or software, erase the software, or change your sim card.
If that doesn't work, just get a new phone. =(

Go to "manage connections". Choose "mobile network options" and change the network selection mode to manual. The phone will search for a minute then show a list of available networks. You should be able to select Edge from there.

I had been having this problem off and on for about 6 months (EDGE would go to edge and then to GSM and I would lose email and internet while phone would continue to work. Usually, taking out battery would work, but once it didnt get back from GSM to EDGE after the battery reset either. This continued for 24 hrs..

I called up AT&T and they said it was some work being done on the network in that area etc.. (didn't sound convincing !) I took out battery again.. and then took out SIM card and replaced it.. but this time pulled the steel SIM card holder right back into locked position (previously it was in a "half-cocked" type of poistion...

Anyways, after that reset, EDGE came back on and all is happy in the world of BB again.. I think it was the SIM thing.. but it could very well also be related to the work on the network being completed.. so you should try both if you are also having the EDGE vs GSM issue

Won't send or recieve data

It must show GPRS, EDGE, 3G or 1xEVS on the top. These are the various data services. If it shows GSM, there may be an issue with the device. You can try to update the OS from blackberry.com or your service provider.
