External hard disk installation

Hi
i have a HP laptop using windows vista
i am trying to connect a external hard disk (manufacturer : Advance or Adiance ?)
when i connect the USB cable, nothing appears in the hard drives list nor pops up
i cannot either find the hard disk when i do "install new device"

can anybody help me ? when i plug the usb cord in i hear a indacation sound that its conected but nothing else happens adn i can not find the device no where

i have th same problem..but this time my windows pro xp is nt detecting my HD. i can hear sound once plugging in the cord into my Usb port..but nithing appears at the my computer..seeki ng for help..thanks

device manager finds it but i cannot see the drive

HI,

does your hard disk require also a USB power cord? maybe it was not included in the original package but you need it.

it is impossible to install windows 7 to an external drive on any PC. to install it you will have to remove the drive you have in the laptop and then run the setup for windows

Make an clean installation of Win 7 and repartition your Hard disk.Use Genuine Windows 7 to avoid blue screen error.AVG 2011 is a very good antivirus.Use Hard disk sanitizer given in Bios settings.Use Tune up utilities 2011or System mechanic latest version.I think your problem will be solved

The hard disk from the laptop has died - something to be expected on a laptop this old.
Extremely easy to fix - just buy a new hard disk, put it in the laptop and install whatever version of Windows you like.

My laptop turns on but goes to a screen that says american megatrends and i dont know what to do

it looks like you have something extra connected that is the bios manufacturer, if you have a new external hard drive connected to it try to remove`it and connect it after your windows starts up in other scenario your computer try`s to detect a hardware that does not respond properly

I try to install XP in my laptop but its say no

this might happen if your HP Hard Disk Drive is SATA ready, i think your using SATA HDD 3.0 version.. usually this design is partition with windows vista... here is a tip use a CD Diskwizard that reformat and repartition your hard disk so that you can install windows xp, trust me its works... How to boot from external hard disk plsss help

You could setup a dual boot system, this requires a fairly large hard disk and you need installation XP and Vista CDs.
The other option is to install XP only on your hard disk.
