I just installed a Panasonic light/fan/heater to replace the old heat lamp in my bathroom. I installed lutron timer switches to control the vent and heater usng the preexistent wiring (15 A circuit). The timer/switch for the heater gets extremely hot. What to do?

  • Anonymous Mar 24, 2011

Retested all connections, replaced timer (both rated for 15a), and still HOT. Replaced with standard 15a switch which did not get warm. Suspect need different timer but 20a? Then wIth additional rereading... Heater calls for 20a circuit. 15a is in place. Since standard switch is fine will I be ok with trying a different timer? Should I get a timer rated for 20a? Is that ok with the 15a breaker? Or, god forbid, do I need an electrician to upgtade the entire circuit to 20a (Better option may be to dry wall the darn ceiling over and pretend this never happened)

You will need to determine what amps the timer switch is rated for, and what are the rated amps for the light/fan/heater. More then likely you will need to buy a new timer switch which is rated for the correct amps. Hope this helps Tim

  • Tim Whalen Mar 25, 2011

putting in a 20a breaker is easier then changing a switch, a breaker is good for 80% of a load, meaning that if you put a amp meter on a 20 amp breaker as long as the pull is 16 amps or below the breaker will not trip. I would just buy a 20 amp breaker and switch, as it is what it calls for, Hope this helped Tim

Bought MA-T530G-MH timer switch for bath exhaust,I installed it now the exhaust fan pulsates when fan is ON, when fan is off fan continues to stay ON but spins very slow

The manual states that on-and-off blinking of load indicates the load is less than minimum.
Minimum load draw is .3 amps and 40 watts.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Lutron-MA-T51-T53-timer-manual.pdf

Generally a bath fan is 1/6 Hp or 3 amps... exceeding the minimum.
Manual indicates that wiring error can also cause on-off blinking.
MA T530 replace single pole switch,,, and either wire from switch can connect to either brass screw on timer.
This timer will not replace 3-way switch.

Defective product is also possible/ call Lutron 800-523-9466 day or night

New dimmer switch not working

Hi -

The Lutron D600P is a preset single pole dimmer. Wiring is pretty straight forward as show in this diagram. Recheck wiring and if OK, continue below.

If power is present on both wires (black / red wires), power is being passed through the switch to the lamp and the light should be on. If not, try replacing the lamp.

Minimum recommended connected load is 40 watts. This switch is ONLY for use with filament type lamps - such as traditional tungsten, halogen, etc. It is NOT to control speed of Fan Motors, nor dimming of CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) energy saving types or other ballast operated lamps such as High (or Low) Pressure Sodium, Metal Halide, Fluorescent, etc. as this would create a high heat condition and could cause a fire.

If you're still having trouble, you can contact Lutron Technical Support Center 1.800.523.9466 24 hrs / 7 days www.lutron.com

I hope this helps & good luck!

I have a Lutron Skylark SLV-600p and I want to connect it to control the ceiling fan with light fixture. The chain broke on the ceiling fan and its an old model which the device is inside the light box...

1) It appears this dimmer is not for fan motor.
Dimmer manual says:
"... do not use to control receptacles, fluorescent lighting fixtures, or motor-driven appliances."
http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/030448c.pdf

2) Call Lutron tech support directly:
1-800-523-9466

3) You can replace the pull chain switch to the fan with a bit of dis-assembly and then purchase of new 3-way fan switch at home center. If you decide to do that, add a comment and we can talk details.

4) In order to get a fan-light control to operate from your switch location, you need the following things:
-Fan has to set on high, so unscrew brass part where chain attaches to fan and see if you can grab end of pull chain, and set fan to high.
-Switch box has to be set up to control the light and fan separately. It sounds like your switch box has that capability with a black wire going to light and red wire to fan.
-You need a Lutron combo control that is specifically for controlling ceiling fan, and light fixture.
Call Lutron for best choice.

Last option: 5) Replace fan with new one from home center.

Add a comment if you order the Lutron combo control and I will help you test the wiring and get it hooked up.

L purchased a Lutron S2-LFSQ for our bathroom light and fan. l was informed by the store, this item was job specific so wouldn't have fan burnout. l now discovered stamped on the switches aluminum edging;...

Yeah, it matters.

The first thing is that the fan-speed in that control is only rated for 1.5-Amps. The issue with bathroom fans (I have to assume an exhaust fan) is not only how much current they pull during normal operation, but what happens if the fan rotor locks - that can pull some pretty hefty current slugs that the device is NOT rated for.

Also, generally speaking, putting fan-control on an exhaust fan doesn't work that well. If you slow down the speed at all, it significantly minimizes the amount of air-flow going through the room - which means you're using all of that energy for basically nothing.

My recommendation is to instead get Lutron's MA-L3T251- device. Here, you have the dimmer for the lights (same as the control you bought), and you have a timer switch that's rated for general purpose fan loads (up to 2.5A).

How to install

Lutron S2-LFSQ is made to control one ceiling paddle fan & 1 light. Switch will not work on florescent lights.
See manual

To use this product, your fan and light must already be controlled by 2 separate switches.

If you have just one switch that turns on the light & fan together, the S2-LFSQ will not work (without additional wiring).

Okay, you have two switches. One switch turns fan on-and-off. The other switch turns light on-and-off.

Here is wiring diagram from manual: See diagram larger

8263536.jpg

Here's how to wire:
-Before disconnecting wires from existing switches, mark each wire with tape and pen.
-There is one wire that feeds power to both switches > mark this the 'Hot wire' and it connects to Lutron black wire (if you are unsure about this wire, remove switches, separate wires, turn on power and test each wire to bare ground, tape tester leads to wood sticks so hands are away from power, Tester lights up on Hot wire)
-The switch that controls fan > mark this the 'Fan wire' and it will connect to Lutron Yellow wire
-the switch that controls light > mark this the 'light wire' and it will connect to Lutron Red wire
-Lutron Green wire or bare wire connects to bare ground wire.

Wiring Bathroom light/vent/heater switch with 3 separate controls

Wiring a bathroom combination vent, heater, light 3 way switch means more wires. In brief, you need to run two cables - one a two wire and one a three wire from the switch to the fan.

Incoming power will have white black and ground.

The two wire cable for the switch to the fan will have wht, blk, and ground.

The three wire will have red, blk, wht, and grnd.

The switch will likely have 2 blacks and a red coming from it, with two blacks and a red on one side, and a single black on the other.

The fan should have a red, blue, green, black, and white.

On the fan end: Group all green/copper grounds together and use a wire nut to fasten them together. Tape the nut to the wires.
There will be five white wires coming through. For ease of handling, using wire nuts, connect two on one nut and three on the other.
connect the blue to a blck. Connect one red to one black, and the other red to the other black.

The switch will have one red going into the 3 wire cable, a black going to the 3 wire cable, and a black form incoming power to the side opposite the 3 wires, and a blck going to the two wire cable.

There. Confused?
